Chapter Sixty-Three

"Are you alright?" I asked Hayley as she coughed into her closed fist while we walked down the streets.

"You look-" Elijah started, but Hayley cut him off.

"A hundred months pregnant and pissed off at the world?"

"I was going to say you look lovely," Elijah said, a small smirk on his lips.

She sent him a soft smile and stayed quiet for a moment, then spoke again. "Do you think I was the target of those bombings?"

"Of course you were the target," Klaus replied. "Were I to wage a war on the wolves, you'd be my first kill. I would string you up for all your worshipers to see," Klaus smirked.

"Well, I'm pretty sure that was Nik's screwed up way of saying that he wants you to come back to the compound," I told her, rolling my eyes at Klaus.

"Perhaps, try a different approach, Niklaus? Fewer references to murder?" Elijah added.

"As much as I would hate to throw you over my shoulder and drag you kicking and screaming to the compound, we both know I will," Nik said. "For the sake of my child."

"One bad dream, and suddenly you wanna be a responsible daddy!" Hayley smiled sarcastically at him.

Klaus put his arm over her shoulders. "Let me put this in perspective. My father lived to torment me. It is not my intention to become him. This cycle of misery ends with my child."

"Hmm," Hayley smiled again. She reached up, shoving Klaus' arm off of her. "You forgot one thing in your attempt to plead your case. She's not your child. She's ours," she walked ahead of us, and I smirked at Klaus.

"Very heartfelt, Niklaus," Elijah said.

"I bloody hate funerals," Klaus grumbled.

"You've gotta love her spirit. She makes everything interesting," I smirked.

"Much like you, Roseia," Elijah said, a sly smile coming on his lips.

We continued to walk for a few moments, when I heard it. I had a habit of pinpointing Hayley's heartbeat in crowds, just to make sure she's okay. And right now, she wasn't. Her heart was skipping beats, and the baby's was fluttering. She was coughing.

"Something's wrong with Hayley," I said.

"What?" Klaus said, his eyes widening slightly as he looked over at me.

"Come with me," I said to the both of them, right before Genevieve called out Klaus' name.

Klaus turned to look at her, while I looked in front of us. I was right, something is wrong.

"Hayley!" Klaus yelled her name.

I ran forwards off of the street, stepping up onto the sidewalk and darting towards Hayley. I caught her right as she fell, blood slipping past her lips as she went unconscious.

"Klaus!" I shouted.

He and Elijah ran up beside us, and Klaus lifted her up into his arms. We ran through the crowd as fast as we could, Genevieve trailing behind us. We made it to the abattoir in less than a minute.

I went over to one of the tables, and tore off the tablecloth along with any dishes or classes that had been left behind. Klaus laid her down onto the table, and Genevieve came up beside her. "I can help!" she said.

"Don't you touch her," Elijah growled, stepping in front of Genevieve.

"Let her be, Elijah, she was a nurse."
