Chapter Fourty-One

A few days later, Klaus and Rebekah had decided to go back to Mystic Falls for a day or two. It turned out that Katerina Petrova was dying, and Klaus decided that he wanted to gloat over it. Also, a boy that Rebekah had had a short time with, Matt Donovan, had been captured by a powerful and very old witch named Silas. I had tried to tell Elijah to leave and go with them, since I knew that he cared about Katerina, but he insisted that Hayley and I were more important.

I didn't want to question him, though. We were in a different place than we were a few months ago. I actually liked having him around.

I pulled on my jacket and grabbed my wallet and shoved it into one of the front pockets of my jeans. I was planning to go out for breakfast, and since Marcel and his friends didn't exactly like me that much right now, I assumed I was going alone. And the breakfast menu of the place I wanted to go to closed down in less than half an hour, so I had to hurry it up a bit. Therefore, I didn't have the time nor the effort to actually ask anyone.

That is, until Elijah was suddenly walking right beside me as I walked out the main exit of the abattoir.

"And where are you off to in such a rush?" He asked.

It was a little odd. Since Davina's death, he had been strangely protective. I hadn't really questioned it, seeing how it certainly didn't bother me. I liked having him around.

"Getting some breakfast. You're welcome to join me, if you'd like," I smiled at him.

He smiled back at me, and nodded.

We both walked down the streets of the French quarter, walking in a comfortable silence as we looked around at all of the many people still taking care of the damage that Davina's storm had left behind. Thankfully, it wasn't much of a problem. A few broken windows, couple holes in the roof's. Nothing that would cost too much to fix.

"I'm glad to see that you're happier now," he said.

I sighed softly, shrugging my shoulders and shoving my hands into my pockets. "Well, there really isn't anything else I can do. I'm not gonna be depressed for the rest of my life."

He smiled sadly at me. "We will find some way to get her back, Rose."

I nodded to him. I had thought about Kol in that moment. How Nik had told me the same thing. 'We will get him back, Jo'.

"Do you remember how I lit a candle every night for Kol?"

He nodded sorrowfully, remembering the days after his little brother's death. "Yes, I do... You spent an entire month trying to find some way to bring him back to life."

"It was like... Like the candle could represent him," I bit my lip. "You know, I could always feel his presence. I could never feel the other ghost's around me, but I always seemed to know when he was around."

"I'm sure that he missed you greatly," Elijah said.

"Just like I missed you," I replied. "Except, you were never dead."

He raised a brow, almost seeming surprised that I had admitted to noticing his absence. "When did you miss me, exactly?"

"Nik and Rebekah probably never told you. Do you remember how you weren't with us for a few years after Mikael came to New Orleans?"

He nodded.

"Well, I kind of grew... Unattached. I don't know. It was like I was depressed. While they went out every night, I fed with blood bags and stayed at whatever home we occupied. I missed you, and Kol, and Finn... Everyone."
