Chapter One Hundred & Fourty-One

Christmas was finally here. Today, to be specific. It was Christmas Day, and this was probably the best possible gift that I could give Rebekah.

Elijah paid some humans to take the route to Rebekah and get her out of the gulf. He had received word that a crate had been found, and that it was going to be brought into the docks that very night. He warned them not to open it, but as we soon found out, they didn't feel that they should listen. They were opening the crate, and talking about how they were going to re-negotiate their deal with him.

Elijah simply wouldn't have that.

He promptly killed them all, while I went to the box that Rebekah had been placed in. I saw that the men had already removed the lid, and the only thing left was to remove the stake in Rebekah's chest.

It bothered me to see her. Her expression was one of fear and pain, even when she was in that sleep-like state.

The stake had little skulls on the handle, and it was a little unnerving. I knew it was a dark object, and something was off about it. I could only hope that it wouldn't have any long-term effects on my dear friend.

I yanked the stake out of her chest, and the veins and greyness slowly disappeared from her skin before she awoke. Elijah came to stand beside me, covered in little splatters of blood. We both looked back down at Rebekah when she inhaled a deep breath, and sat up.

Elijah grinned, a bright smile that I rarely saw on him. "Hello, sister."

Rebekah smiled back, seeming exhausted for the time being as she continued to pant a little. "Tell me I didn't miss Christmas."

I let out a laugh of relief. "You're right on time, Beks."

We ended up at a gas station on our way back to New Orleans. Rebekah had seemed to be in an irritated mood the entire time, and I had a feeling that part of the reason why was because she was still in wet clothes that she had worn for what seemed like an eternity while in the Ocean. She always loved to look her best, and in her opinion, now was not one of those times.

She came out of the bathroom, while I leaned up against the car. Elijah was pumping gas, while inspecting the odd-looking stake.

She huffed in disgust. "I think I prefer the bottom of the murky sea to that restroom," she remarked, then threw her now disgusting jacket into the trashcan beside the gas pump.

"Still hungry, are we?" Elijah hummed, turning around to look at her and I.

Rebekah was even more irritated, while she scratched at her left arm. "I'm not hungry, I'm angry. Staked by your ex, drowned by Nik's? You two need a lesson in women," she scoffed, then gestured to me. "I'm just glad you finally got one right."

"Awwww," I smiled. "Why thank you, Bekkers."

Elijah couldn't help but smile ever so slightly, then continued talking to Rebekah.

"Could the lesson not be yours to learn, Rebekah? Didn't you damn one to eternity, viciously antagonize the other?"

"Those lunatics actually believe the prophecy," she muttered, then looked at the looks on our faces. "You don't, do you?" she asked incredulously.

She kept scratching at her arm, and I noticed it. I kept watching her forearm rather closely. It worried me. What if I was right?

"It would be foolish to ignore the manifestations of these omens."

"We can't be killed, Elijah!"

"This prophecy does state one of us will fall by family," he argued.

"Well, I would never harm you. You killed half the navy rescuing me. Freya hates traitors."

"Freya is allegiant to Finn, but I think that we can trust her," I told them.

"So that leaves Nik," Rebekah sighed. "Do you think he's learned his lesson about backstabbing his family?"

"Oh, I think he learns that lesson all the time. He's just a terrible student," Elijah smirked, then turned and removed the pump from the gas tank. He hung it back on the hook, but I was too focused on Rebekah.

Her eyes had turned into their vampire form, and to say that she looked angry was an understatement. I was definitely right.

"Do you ever want to just rip out his heart and see how long it takes to grow back?" she hissed.

Elijah turned to her in surprise, while I focused on her arm. She let out a yelp of pain, and pulled her sleeve up.

"Damn," I growled when I saw the mark forming.

"What is it?" Elijah asked, moving closer to us.

It looked like her skin was discoloured, turning red. It resembled the beginnings of a bruise, but this was in a shape. Of course, it was in the shape of a skull, the very thing that lined the stake she had been stabbed with.

"Marvellous. What do you get the girl who has everything this Christmas? A cure to the magical mark growing on her bloody arm," she said, looking a hundred percent fed up with everything.

Frankly, I was too. It was time to get to Freya and find out what the hell was going on.

When we finally did get back to the compound, I had already texted Hayley and told her that something strange was up. To which she informed me that Freya had been attacked by the Strix, and Jackson was the one who had saved her. I heard Freya speaking as we came inside.

"I was meeting with a witch from the bloodline who built the lock," Freya said, wheezing a little. "I was hoping she could help me destroy it, but it's not possible. She said the only way to get rid of it is use it. We have to get it back and lock something else away, anything but my family."

"Great," Hayley said, sounding rather smug. "Why don't we pay Tristan a visit and ask really, really nicely?"

"I'm afraid we have a far more urgent problem," Elijah said as we came into the courtyard, where everyone looked to us. Hayley stood up, while Freya looked at us in worry, the same as Jackson.

"Well, to be fair, I am the prettiest urgent problem you have ever seen," Rebekah grinned.
