The rays from the sun nourished the dark room with light and unveiled the blanket of darkness over a girl, who was fast asleep on a step, her hands covering a glowing lamp. She had been sleeping near that lamp the whole night. Her eyes fluttered open like a bird flapping it's wing and instantly fell upon the bright flame.
"Many nights have passed away where this flame keeps glowing, yet no sign of the person who keeps this alight. I wrap my hands around this light to protect you, but you just never seem to appear. This lamp indicates your life and I will always keep it alight." She talked to the lamp, observing the heights of the moving flame and almost seeing the reflection of Ashok in it. Her elaborately decked up hair shined with jewels that covered her head. Her bindi dangled over her forehead and covered the secret vermillion marks she had been putting on. (Married women put vermillion on their forehead) Kaurvaki had already married Ashok in her mind. She was waiting to meet him after many months. A year had passed since he had been exiled and no news of his survival. As long as her lamp was alight, she was reassured that he was alive.
