The fishermen of Kovalam
Are pulling in their net
Aya, aya, aya, oh
Pulling in their net.
Just like Kerala fishermen
Have always pulled them in.

Pulling in their net.
Two lines of men are pulling ropes
Kerala morning sun
Aya, aya, aya, oh
Got to pull it in.
The net is floating out at sea
Got to pull it in
Aya, aya, aya, oh
Got to pull it in.
Man at the back is folding rope
Neatly in a coil
Aya, aya, aya, oh
Got to pull it in.
Each pulls till he is near the back
Then will forward go
Aya, aya, aya, oh.
Working as a team.
Long way out they are working hard
Working as a team

Pulling that net in.
Tourists gather with their cameras
Watch them pull it in
Aya, aya, aya, oh
This is what we do.
Passers by duck under the rope
There's saris in the sea
Aya, aya, aya, oh
Men just carry on.
The net is getting closer now
Two men in the sea
Aya, aya, aya, oh
They will bring it in.
More go in are splashing about
Scaring back the fish
Aya, aya, aya, oh
Net is nearly in.
Now they have got it on the shore
Crowd all gathered round
Now the net is in.
Just a bundle on the ground
Wait while fish calm down.
Great excitement all around
As the net's unwound.
Not much to show for all their work
But the net's been gathered in.
For us it was a pleasant show
Seeing the net come in
But the fishermen just got on with it
Just like they always have.
