21. Figure in the Shadows

3rd Person Omniscient POV

Y/N passes Sam's office on her way out.
He's still there.

"Sam? I thought you were going to take a break."

"I changed my mind," he says sleepily. "Especially with this Nightmare around, can't be too careful."

"Okay, well Goodnight Sam. I'll find Bad and tell him to start his shift."

"Thank you."

Y/N walks out.

Well, that wasn't expected. Oh well, I can still make this work. I won't break my promise.

Y/N had worn her assassin clothing underneath her armor and brought her discs with her.

She passes Bad heading for the prison on the Prime Path.

"Hey Bad!" she says brightly.

"Hey Y/N!" Bad replies. "Finished with your shift?"

"Yeah, I'm heading home."

"Okay see you tomorrow!" he replies cheerfully and walks off.

She waits until he's out of range and quickly goes behind a tree to remove her armor, attach her belt and disc pouch, and slips on the hood and mask.

Nightmare's coming...

Nightmare follows Bad silently through the forest to the prison. Bad opens the portal and Nightmare climbs onto the top of the portal and goes through. (Basically hanging on upside down). Bad gets ready to deactivate the portal and Nightmare quietly slips down the hall into Sam's office.

Sam lies asleep at his desk. Nightmare smiles.

He should have gone home to sleep.

Nightmare strolls over and quietly turns all the alarms off, placing TNT inside the desk and inside the control panel. She locks the door and closes it quietly.

After running from room to room placing TNT.
Nightmare stops at Y/N's room. Her fingers brush against the clothing, writing, and drawings as she hastily unpacks them.

She collects most of the items and fills the room with TNT.

Nightmare drinks milk and mines down. Dropping to the railway system with the elder guardians. The first guardian comes in the mine cart and the sword's blade slices it in half. Again and again, until all the guardians are dead. She destroys all the tracks and leaves TNT and end crystals everywhere.

Nightmare quickly locks all the doors, and entrances, and blocks off the guard entrance.

After placing as many explosives as possible, Nightmare faces the cell and lets the lava fall, one final time.

Meanwhile, Bad tries to open a door but finds it locked.

"What the muffin?" he curses and tries to break open the door. He finally opens it and runs through the hallways trying to find Sam.

"Sam!" he bangs on the door. "Sam!"

Sam awakes with a start and tries to open the door but it's locked.

"Fuck it's locked."

They both try to break the door and Sam eventually uses his axe and breaks it open.

"Sam!" Bad rushes in. "All the doors have been locked!"

"Don't worry," Sam reassures him. "This way, Dream can't escape and no one can get in. Stay here while I check on him."

Bad nods and sits at the desk.

Sam leaves Bad and after breaking down one entrance after another, he pauses in front of his guard room door. He breaks open the door and glances around.

The room seems simple at first.
Armor stands.
Books stacked neatly.
The green bed already made.

He opens a locked chest and pulls out some pictures.

Dream, George, Sapnap, Callahan, Alyssa, Ponk, Bad, and him standing in front of the community house, laughing.

Why couldn't we just have been friends?

He stares at Dream's picture.

We're enemies now.

Nightmare stands on the bridge as the lava falls and places TNT on the bridge, successfully destroying it. Dream looks up and is scared to find a person in black standing on the other side.

Nightmare pearls over and raises two silver discs over Dream. He closes his eyes and flinches but the discs slice through his chains easily. They break his wrist cuffs, ankle cuffs, and his collar. He gasps and rubs the places gingerly.

Nightmare then starts to mine up through the cell's obsidian ceiling.

Dream grabs his cards, book with papers, journal, pillow, and blanket.

Nightmare drops a belt down to Dream so he can put the items in.

(Remember: Belt= inventory)

He quickly puts it on and fills it with his items. He glances at his old prison uniform and throws it into the lava.

Nightmare drops down, now wearing full netherite.

"Hey!" Sam yells from the other side. He shoots an arrow at Dream but Nightmare moves in front and catches the arrow. She pushes Dream telling him to escape.

Nightmare pearls over to Sam.

"Bad!" Sam yells as he blocks a hit. "Sound the alarm!"

Bad nods and runs off. Sam continues to fight Nightmare.

Why are they so good?

They fight, blocking hit after hit until she disarms him and cuts his arm before returning to Dream and climbing up as well. She drops TNT and an end crystal before filling in the hole.

"Thank you," Dream blinks as he stares at the black mask with a white smiley face.

She grabs his wrist and holds him while she places TNT and end crystals to cover the surface of the prison.

"What are you doing?" Dream asks.

Nightmare grabs his throat and squeezes it as a warning. He nods fearfully and she lets go.
She hands him a shield and he gratefully takes it.

The sun rises over the prison, the sky turns from black to light blue, pink, orange, and yellow. The sun rises over the horizon signaling dawn and he breathes in the fresh air.

Nightmare grabs him again and points to the ground. Figures in purple netherite are running towards the prison. They reach the base of the prison and stare at Dream and Nightmare.

Sapnap gasps and points as Sam shouts orders.

"What should we do?" Dream asks.

I can fight all of them and keep Dream safe, she thinks. We have to run for it.

Her left-hand locks tightly around his wrist and she takes a deep breath. The white eyes of the mask meet his terrified emerald green ones.

She jumps towards the water, pulling Dream behind.
