I sat on the sidelines of the school's football field, praying that my Caleb wouldn't see me sitting out here with River's jacket on my lap.

"Scarlet!" River yelled, jogging toward me. I sent him a glare as he approached, his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath.

"Shut up, Caleb could hear you." I hissed, throwing his jacket into his hands. He shrugged, throwing his thumb back over his shoulder.

"I wouldn't worry about him. I saw Del all over him a couple hours ago. They're probably pretty busy by now." I scrunched my face up at the comment for more then one reason.

The first being that it was Delia and she better hope Caleb doesn't take her back, because I'll find some way to make her life a living hell. The other was the fact that I knew Daisy liked him, and she thinks she might be pregnant with his kid.

"The Pitt twins are throwing some bad ass party by the lake tonight, you wanna go?" He took a strand of my hair, messing with it as he waited for a response.

"I don't know." I muttered. He cocked an eyebrow, genuine curiosity in his eyes.

"Why? Are you scared too?" He asked. I shrugged a shoulder, avoiding his eyes.

"I just. . . what if Caleb's there? What if he sees us and. . ." River covered my mouth, cutting off the rest of what I had been about to say.

"Then we'll tell him about whatever the hell it is we are right now. I'm not afraid of him, Scarlet. Not anymore. You shouldn't be either." He replied, smiling. I sighed, nodding slowly.

"Sure, I guess I'll go." Even though I sounded sure of myself, I was positive that River could see how nervous I really was and just didn't want to say anything about it.

River disappeared just as he always did after school. He had dropped me off, let Steve know he had the car, then took off down the street.

So it didn't really come as a surprise when he called me and let me know he was down the street almost an hour late.

I let Steve know where I was going before grabbing a jacket and my purse.

"You're late." I pointed out once I got to the car, "And you look like a creep parking all the way down here and driving slowly." He rolled his eyes, leaning across the cup holders to kiss me. I ducked my head before he could, my cheeks warming up.

"I don't want you to hurt yourself." I said upon seeing his confused and hurt look.

"Well, apparently you don't care about hurting my feelings." He cracked a smile, obviously okay with what happened. I laughed as I pulled my seat belt on.

"Who could possibly hurt your feelings? You're River." He didn't respond, but started the car and revved the engine instead. I stayed quiet the whole way to the lake, occasionally muttering to myself about how cold it was going to be where we were going.

"We're here." I looked out the window, swallowing the lump in my throat when I saw how many people were here.

"Maybe-" I started.

"No. Come on, Scarlet. You need to learn how to have fun for once." I sighed in defeat and climbed out of the car. I immediately reached back into the car for my jacket and slid it on, feeling River's hand rest gently on my back.

"Don't look like someone just ran over a puppy. Smile." I tried to force a smile on to my face, but it fell seconds later when I saw Collin sitting with some girl in front of the bonfire.

"Shit." I gasped, walking back toward the car.

"What?" River jogged after me, grabbing my elbow.

"Collin is here. I have to go." I reached into his pocket, trying to find the keys to the car. He shook his head, grabbing my wrist.

"It's fine, Carls. He won't see us."

"He's right there! Of course he's going to see us!" I shouted, regretting it the moment I saw Collin lift his head and look in our direction.

I barely had enough time to turn my head before River had me pushed back up against Steve's car, kissing me and completely blocking my brothers view of us.

After a second River must have forgotten the real reason he had kissed me so suddenly in the first place, because he slipped his hands from my waist to behind my head. I grabbed at his arm as he deepened the kiss.

"River, no." I said, breathless. He tore himself away quickly, shaking his head.

"I'm sorry, Scarlet. I. . . fuck, I'm an idiot." He took the bridge of his nose in between his fingers, whispering under his breath.

"River." I whispered, stepping toward him. He backed away every step I took closer.

"I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have forced-"

"Forced? You didn't force anything, River. You didn't do anything wrong." I wrapped my arms around him, searching his eyes. They held a distant look in them, like his mind was in an another galaxy.

"But what if I had? What if I'd lost control? I've done it before, Scarlet, I don't want it to happen again." I stood on my tippy toes and kissed him.

"It won't. I promise." I said, then gave him a crooked grin, "And I don't break my promises."

We ended up ditching the party that River had so desperately wanted to go to and driving back to the house. We decided to stop at the park by the house and sit in the car and talk instead of going straight home.

"It seems to me that we need to figure out what the hell is going on with this relationship." River announced, kicking his feet up onto the dashboard. I slapped his legs, returning his smile.

"My brother will kill you if he sees shoe marks." River rolled his eyes at what I said.

"He's not exactly the brother I'm worried about right now, Carls." He joked. We stayed quiet for a moment before River climbed out of the car and unzipped his pants.

"Uh, River?" I mumbled, my cheeks heating up. "What are you doing?" He waved me off, shutting the door behind him.

"I'm going to take a piss, I'll be right back." I could feel my cheeks heat up even more when I thought about which park we were at. It didn't have a bathroom.

"No!" I cried, getting out of the car, "Don't kill the innocent plants!" I could hear him laughing from wherever he was in the dark park. I wrapped my arms around myself, starting to feel a little uncomfortable.

I had always watched movies where the women had just stood there completely unaware that there was someone behind them, watching their every move. But right now, I was sure that there was someone out here watching me, and it wasn't River.

"River!" I yelled, "Come on. We should go home." I heard him say something before the sound of leaves rustling echoed throughout the quiet night.

"River." I repeated, starting to turn back toward the car. Before I could do anything else, a hand was thrown over my mouth and I was pulled into the stark black bushes behind me.
