Wires- The Neighbourhood

"You knew the game and played it. It kills to know that you have been defeated. I see the wires pulling while you're breathing. You knew you had a reason."

"Ledger, what the fuck? I thought we were in the clear this month?" JC whisper yells.

I lay low in the dark. Feeling my eyes sting from the unknown.

"I have no idea." Ledger whispers back coldly. He's near me, but he walks backwards. I hear his steps, tumbling around the room. It's statically quiet in here, and outside the room. All fighters I assume went to hide in their "stowaways", whatever that is. The entrance opens, and Ledger steps out. "Don't let anyone out, and don't flash any lights. Got it?" He commands JC sternly.

"Of course, brother."

"Stay quiet. No talking." Ledger commands. The door closes, and I assume he's gone.

What in the fuck is going on?

I hear wheezing in the corner where Jake is at.

"Quiet Dennings." JC whisper yells.

He's hurt. Physically, mentally, emotionally, all of it. I am the same, but considering I was about to be raped, it's hard to not also feel incredibly numb to everything. The floor, the air, my thoughts. Everything. Jake quiets some, but his breathing is still rough. I crawl to the direction of the noise of his breathing.

Maybe we will be punished more, but I need to be near him. I need to feel him. I bump into the table next to him, holding in the wince where I want to scream out. I reach my hand out in the darkness to his skin. He sucks in a breath. I lean into what I think his right ear is at, "I'm here." I whisper.

He doesn't respond, but I can tell he knows it's me. He lays his head lower, nuzzling into my cheek. He turns his head, his lips against my forehead. His mouth forming the words, "I'm sorry, baby." My eyes squeeze out the tears, holding in the pressure of it all. "I love you." He whispers quietly, not really caring if everyone else is in the room hears.

I'm noting mentally this is the first time he's saying it first, which just causes my tears harder, "I love you." I answer back.

More sounds come from outside, and I'm left confused from everything. "What's going on?" I whisper to him.

"I don't know. Code red either means there is an intruder, such as a competing Underground, the police, or a gang."

"I thought you said the police are in on it too?"

"The Sheriff is. Not the whole police department."

A noise is made, and I hear someone take in a sharp breath. Another alarm goes off, three quick beats are made.

"Shit." Jake breathes.

What? The door opens up rapidly, and I find myself crawling backwards.

The lights turns on, and an angrier Ledger steps forward. A vein pops out of his head, "They're coming."

"Who?" JC asks.

"The police. One of the lieutenants came ahead and gave us a warning." Without even blinking, a dagger is pulled from his pocket, and he slashes Jake's already bruised cheek. I scream out, rushing towards them, to only be pushed away from his height. His knife, cuts the ropes off each arm of Jake, letting Jake finally fall to his knees. His body crumbles to the ground, and I'm quick on my knees towards him, but the knife comes out right before my neck touches it. "You're lucky." Ledger growls.
