Lucas' POV
"Hey sweetie! How was work?" My mom called from the kitchen. She sounded oddly optimistic about the idea of me working, given that she had yelled at me for half an hour when I first told her I had gotten the job at a music shop. Once I told her I would only spend the money on gas for my car she calmed down a little, but still kept a frown on her face when I left to go to work.

"Uh, hey mom" I frowned walking cautiously into the kitchen. A part of me was convinced that she was trying to lure me in before screaming at me again, "work was good".
She was standing in front of the sink washing some dishes as usual. Nothing looked weird or out of place so I relaxed a little, maybe she'd finally come around to the idea or me working again.

"That's great. I made a chicken salad for lunch if you're hungry" she offered nodding in the direction of a large glass bowl. "When do you ever make salad?" I mumbled grabbing a plate anyway, before she could answer it came to me out of no where. I froze and turned to look at her, "when you have bad news" I answered my own question. That explained her 'good mood'.

Her reaction confirmed my suspicions. She stopped washing the bowl she had been relentlessly scrubbing since I entered the house and dropped it into the sink. "Mom?" I asked stepping towards her. Her back was tense and she was staring intensely into the sink, it was obvious she was trying to avoid looking at me.

"What happened?" I asked placing my hand on her shoulder. She squeezed her eyes shut but a tear still managed escaped through one of her eyes. Before I even opened my mouth to ask again she wiped the tear away with the back of her hand then turned to face me, "I'm so sorry sweetie" she sighed shaking her head, "it happened out of nowhere, I really wasn't expecting this".

"Mom, you do realize I have no idea what you're talking about, right?" I frowned, "what happened?"
She sighed again then led me reluctantly to the dining table. I sat down across from her and she held my hands in hers from the other side of the table. Her pained expression made me nervous for whatever was about to come, as it should've. What came out of her mouth was something I couldn't have never prepared for.

"Your father is being released early on the grounds of good conduct" she stared at me tentatively, waiting for my reaction.
Like I said, I never could've been prepared for that, even in the two years when he was supposed to come out I knew I wouldn't be able to find a way to get myself ready for it.
"Oh" was all that came out of my mouth. I had no clue what the expression on my face was, but judging by my mothers wary eyes, I would assume it wasn't great.

"I only found out today. I'm so sorry baby, it's my job to protect you and the one person I should be protecting you from is going to be free to walk the streets in 2 weeks" she began sobbing. "2 weeks?" I breathed heavily.
She nodded and let go of my hands to wipe her tears. I still didn't know how to react, all I could think to do was comfort my mom, keeping her happy was the only thing I was always certain about.
"You've done an amazing job mom" I promised, "I couldn't have asked for a better mother".

"A better mother would've kept your father away from you for good" she sobbed, "I'm so sorry Lucas". "You have nothing to be sorry about" I assured her,"we'll get through this, me and you mom. I promise" I moved to the chair next to her and wrapped my arm around her shoulders.

"Oh Lucas" she sighed patting my hand, "you're already looking after me, it should be the other way around".
"Hey, we look after each other. You always do a better job but I usually do the best I can, okay?"
My mom smiled but it didn't reach her eyes, "Okay".
