To start a journey
I have only ever had
to take a step
forward—
endless—it is a road
that I have got
To continue the path
I have only ever had
to endure nights
of bitterness—
of grief—I can only pretend
I am happy when I am not
To start a fire
I have only ever had
to scratch the surface
strike—
and again—it is a search
for my only shot
To douse the spark
I have only ever had
to lie on waters deep
chafe—
choke—I can only pretend
I am fine when I am not
To start a life
I have only ever had
to look at the stars
shining—
wondrous—it is the sense
that I have to plot
To end in death
I have only ever had
to stake a step
forward—
endless—it is a trap
that leads me to pretend
I am content when I am not
