I look back
expecting to see
glorious triumph
—faded bliss
of once was

Instead, I beheld
drops of dead grace
meaningless space
—versions of me
broken and afraid

Mistakes now bite back
I run only to stumble
in the dark
—my own filth
stains me

Unable to move on
I look back
to see regrets
—piling up in pieces
of my memory

Instead, I tell a lie
that I am special
that I am grand
—what lies they are
even I believe them

So in my life
I reflect back
to the roads
that led me
to where I am

I suffered in my toil
I gave too much
just to be hurt
—empty with nothing
to give anymore
—jaded hiss
of what could be
but didn't

Unable to step forward
I can only look back
to see seasons change
—time moves on
only to forget me
