Author POV

The liquid in the vial burned the back of his throat, causing the human to let out a hacking cough. The mermen looked like they were wincing at the noise. Then they all fell to silence, Jimin was full of trepid hope. He wanted this to work, he prayed for that small part of him to have the mer blood that would bind with the potion.

At first there was nothing. But maybe that was because Jimin was to eager for a result.

It seemed like a gradual progression, first it was barely a whisper, like someone was shouting at a distance to far to hear. But then they got closer, more audible.

Eventually the potion's effect seemed to stop, Jimin was unfocused, but the buzzing feeling had stopped in his veins, therefore the potion had finished its job. So that is when Jimin allowed himself to finally breath.

Then he allowed himself to focus, trying to see if the potion worked on his human body. When the water lapped itself onto the beach Jimin focused on it, frowning a little, he could vaguely hear it but the sound seemed muffled and unclear.

The more he noticed his surroundings the more he heard, but it was muted, not clear like before the accident that led up to this point. It seemed like he had retained some of his deafness, just to a lesser extent.

He was aware of the mermen's eyes upon him, awaiting the results.

"Can you make a noise?" Jimin signed to them.

He wondered if voices would be clearer than surroundings, so he watched the mermen with baited breath.

"Jimin" the mermen seemed to synchronise themselves to speak all at once. Of course it only sounded like a couple of clicks, but it was enough to make Jimin tear up.

He could hear the clicking noise, it wasn't entirely clear but it was audible.

So when he saw his Grandfather, Hyun a little further out he gestured to him. He wanted to see if words in his own language would be easier to comprehend and assess how much he could hear. He already knew that he didn't have his full hearing back, but it was something.

So when Hyun pulled himself into the shallows, hands resting on the sandy beach he once walked on as a human, Jimin's attention turned to him.

"Can you say something in Korean?" He signed to his Grandfather, he knew the old man would know the language, he documented it after all.

"Did it work?" Were the words spoken.

Jimin could hear them but it still felt muffled, like he was hearing through sound cancelling headphones.

"I can hear you, but not completely clearly"  He signed to his Grandfather.

His Grandfather signed backwards and forwards with his Grandson, they were saying somethings the mermen just couldn't comprehend. The mermen were looking between the pair like they were at a tennis game, silent and trying to understand.

Eventually when their signed conversation ended, they had obviously come to a conclusion that had completely gone over the heads of the mermen.

Jimin's Grandfather had described his hearing loss as partial deafness, something he had suffered as he grew with age. From Hyun's deduction it would seem Jimin would need hearing aids to clear up the muffled sound, but that should allow him to hear as close to what it once was, not completely but close. Jimin could almost cry when he read that from his Grandfather's hands.

Hyun explained the situation to the mermen, he knew they species better and what they could and could not comprehend. Jimin didn't mind he just needed the time to process that he had a chance of getting his hearing back to a standard where he could play and hear music once more.

The mermen must have gotten the news as Jimin was tackled by an overly excitable merman.

That's when it really happened.

The moment Jimin's head went into the shallow water he was currently sitting in it was like everything exploded in a wave of sound. Jimin re-emerged from the water, a look of pure shock on his face. The mermen sensed something was wrong, looking at him with confused puppy dog like eyes.

Jimin to test the moment again dipped his head under the water and that was the moment he found his hearing was perfect underwater. When he surfaced again he explained with excited hands that were shaking as he moved them.

He watched his Grandfather's eyes widen, understanding came across his face.

"It makes sense that your hearing would be perfect underwater. The potion is designed for mers, it healed the mer hearing you had underwater, it has some effect on your human hearing on land but not to the full extent as a mer doesn't need to hear on land." Hyun's hands moved fast as he explained his theory.

Jimin nodded, watching as his Grandfather shared the news with the other mermen. Their eyes widened slightly, making their facial scales glisten in the sun as the light caught them.

"You hear perfect under?" Taehyung signed then pointed to the water.

"Yes" Jimin signed in confirmation.

The mermen shrieks were audible to Jimin, just not as loud as they used to be with his complete hearing, for that he was thankful. He dipped his hear underwater, just so he could hear the full sound under the waves, it was peaceful.

He made sure to thank the mermen by rubbing his cheek to theirs. The mermen were eager to return the comforting gesture of thanks. It was only then when Jimin heard the resounding hisses from the mermen. He frowned in confusion, the hissing sound was threatening in a way.

So when he turned his head in the direction towards the mermen's perceived threat, he immediately lit up with joy.

For the dangerous threat was his cats. Latte and Mocha were casually strolling down the beach, and when Jimin squinted his eyes he saw several small forms following them, kittens.

So to clarify, Jimin needs hearing aids on land, but he has perfect hearing underwater.
