Author POV

Turns out the mer species had a semblance of magic it would seem. Jimin learnt of this when he received a formal invitation to meet with the King of the merfolk. Along with the invitation came a potion that the King rarely bestowed, a potion that would allow Jimin to breath underwater for an entire day without the risk of drowning.

The potion came with a magic bracelet that would alert him to when the potion would run out, to prevent him from drowning by being too far underwater and being unaware of the potion running out.

Jimin had accepted the invitation with a smile, watching his mates visibly shake in excitement due to the fact they could show Jimin their home, as they had seen his.

When the day finally arrived Jimin was trembling, both in fear and anticipation of the day ahead of him. When he got into the water is when it all began to feel real, his mates emerged from the water as gracefully as they always do.

With encouraging smiles thrown at the human, Jimin downed the potion. It felt thick and was difficult to swallow. There was a short moment of stabbing pain in his neck, immediately his hand came to grasp the spot where the pain bloomed from. When it connected with his neck he realised something was different, he had gills, they were lower than a mer's was, but the potion he took had given him temporary gills to breath underwater.

He clipped the bracelet onto his wrist and secured it tightly, not wanting it to come off while he was in the middle of his underwater adventure. He was only wearing some swim shorts, so he had no issues heading straight out into the water. He had left his hearing aids back at the house, they weren't waterproof so he had no reason to bring them, plus as he discovered taking the potion that restored his hearing, he could hear perfectly underwater.

The mermen looked to him before disappearing under the water, Jimin took one last shaky breath before submerging himself under the water.

~*~

When Jimin opened his eyes for the first time underwater, he was met with one of the most beautiful sights. The mermen he had come to recognise as his mates, swam around him. Their tails moving effortlessly to push them through the water, their tails seem to reflect the light of the sun while under the water.

They swam around him as Jimin headed out to see, he discovered even if he opened his mouth under the water, the gills still worked and he was unable to drown. The mermen led him further and further out to sea, Jimin followed him even when his muscles started to feel lethargic from the exercise.

When the mermen noticed Jimin beginning to lack behind due to being tired, Namjoon swam so that he was underneath Jimin, allowing the human to attach himself to the merman's back. So Namjoon could swim for them both instead of using up all of the human's energy.

With Namjoon swimming for them both, the mermen were able to pick up their pace, not as fast as they usually would, but far faster than they were travelling before.

It was quite a while out to sea when the mermen finally started diving down, clearly their home was deep beneath them.

~*~

The sight that greeted Jimin when he finally got the first glimpse of the mermen's home was nothing short of exquisite. The abode of the mer people seemed to glow in the darkness of the deep sea.

Jimin's mates swam through the crowds of colourful tailed mermen, they got the occasional glance when others noticed the human in the small shoal of mermen. They were to meet with the King immediately as per request on the initial invitation, then after that Jimin had permission to explore the colony.

Jimin's eyes weren't as adjusted as the mermen's were, but it would seem with the potion that gave him gills had also given him semblance to a mermen's eyesight beneath the waves. He only continued to gaze around at the beauty of the mer's world as they made their way to the King's abode.

~*~

The King's abode was nothing short of incredible, Jimin after discovering that all the merfolk knew the sign language was able to easily converse with the King. The elder mer found himself comfortable in the human's presence.

After they feared the human's for so long, and have fought against them on multiple occasions having a human go against their expectations was a nice change of pace. The King agreed with Jimin to give him a supply of the potion that allowed him to breath beneath the waves and formally acknowledged the complete bond Jimin and his mermen mates shared together.

Receiving the King's blessing was a big sign of respect to the mers, so Jimin's mates were positively beaming after their meeting concluded.

~*~

After the meeting concluded, the afternoon was spent with the mermen taking Jimin on a whistle stop tour of their home beneath the waves. They had multiple surprises on the way.

But Jimin's favourite surprise by far was when they stopped at a home. Immediately he had been engulfed in a hug by his Grandma. After that they had spoken for hours together, while Jimin's mates watched on with fond expressions.

They had left their home well into the night, only breaking apart as Jimin's bracelet had alerted to them only having less than an hour before the potion would run out and they wanted Jimin on the mainland when the potion finally finished its work.

Jimin had left with a beaming smile and that smile had stayed on his face when he stood on the bay's beach.
