Toby

After finishing our meal and talking about random life events I pay the bill despite Spencer's comments about letting her pay it at least splitting the bill.

"What a night" I let out a breathy chuckle as I pull out of the parking lot.

"Yvonne?" I call wondering why she is so quiet

"Yeah?" She mutters and I sigh

"Say what's on your mind"

"Why would anything be on my mind? My fiancé has two twin daughters with his ex that although I don't know what happened I am smart enough to know the breakup wasn't mutual like you said to me but actually Spencer's choice meaning you would still be there if it wasn't for whatever she said to you" she rambles

"Yvonne we all have a past. There are things you didn't tell me. And I can't get mad at you for that because although we are engaged doesn't mean every detail of things that happened pre new relationship has to be shared. My past with Spencer is complicated and I don't have to share everything especially if she doesn't agree"

"Ugh here we go again all night you were on her side. Doing what's best for her. Well what about what's best for me?"

"I'm sorry what did you want me to do? Yell at her for her actions and feelings and then fight her for custody so that way she didn't have to move here and we don't have to see her and only have to deal with the kids? Put yourself in Spencer's shoes. If you would've done the same how would you want me to react? Plus this is Spencer's home. She moved to DC for school but wasn't even given the opportunity to come back home because of this scenario. But many people she knows and loves is here. As well as this is her hometown. So yeah I'm gonna do what I can to make her feel welcome and comfortable because I can tell she feels shitty enough and why should I make her feel worse? that's not me and if that's what you think I'd do then you don't know me as well as I thought" I spit

"Oh good! We are finally on the same page" she yells

"What the hell does that mean?"

"I don't know Tobias" she rolls her eyes and I sigh

"Really you're mad about that?"

"Well you want me to put myself in Spencer's shoes now put yourself in mine. How would it feel to you if my ex who I've known for a decade came back in town and less than 24 hours we are acting as if no time has passed and he's revealing things about me that you never knew?"

"I'd understand that you guys had a history in a different time where obviously he will know different things about you. Spencer knows everything about my past. And I mean that's understandable but she knows nothing about the now. So what that we have a history? It's more than just a romantic history Yvonne. That's why the connection is so strong why don't you get that? Why are you letting your jealousy rule?" I ask her as I park our car in our driveway.

She angrily opens her door and slams it shut, heading inside.

I sigh as I turn the car off, grab my stuff and head inside, locking the door behind me.

"Come on Yvonne. You were there tonight you seen her vulnerable, you seen her trying to be friendly with you. How could you have anything against her?"

"I don't okay! That's the thing. No matter how much I want to dislike her I can't. She's smart, she's beautiful, she's made mistakes and is talking accountability. She's funny, humble, kind and caring and it makes me feel bad for feeling the way I do around her but I can't help it. I just want the connection that you guys have"

"But why?" I question "what we have is so much different than what she and I had and it's so nice. And it's ours"

"Maybe that's what's bothering me. Like even though she is your ex she was away. So when I heard stories it was different but having her here and seeing how everyone interacts with you both it makes me realize that like you're not mine. And I thought one thing I would have over her is being a mother to your kids but I don't even have that anymore. So maybe I feel a bit less important or less of value." She admits her voice getting quieter at the end as a few tears slip from her eyes
