Lyra's POV
"Jacob Russo" i mumbled as i read the title
"This is ridiculous" i thought as i skimmed through the boldly worded proposal
It was rather a formal invitation for my company, [an architectural firm] and Jacob's law firm to collaborate together
Jacob wants to legally represent us
"Is it a game?" Arthur's voice ruffled through the speaker and i sighed
"Even if it is, why is he playing this game" i said confused
With every page, i was even more confused
"Looking at this proposal, most of it is literally in my favor, there's nothing extraordinary of interest for him so why did he even bother?" I said through the phone
"Maybe he wants to get to know you" Arthur said
"Didn't you meet him at the ball?" He asked me and i bit my lip
"Not just the ball" i said and told him about our brief meeting and my suspicious exit from yesterday
"And you said that this proposal came in yesterday too?" He asked me
"Yes, thats what my assistant told me" i said
"Then its clear, he's definitely after something" he said
"But what? How in the world did he even know about me?" I said even more confused
None of this makes sense
Jacob's a hotshot lawyer, if he becomes an enemy, it will be a competitive battle against him
"Maybe he doesn't know who you are" Arthur said calmly
"Maybe he's just bluffing" Arthur said and it hit me
He's right
"Or maybe Melissa slipped something" he added
"That can't be" i said and Arthur went silent
"Not trying to speak ill, but Melissa tends to get excited and nervous really frequently and she often lets important information slip" Arthur said and i bit my lip
"I think you should tell her about this. That way if she knows something, she can come clean" he said
"Okay, I'll go talk to her right now" i said picking up the phone, getting ready to end the call
"Oh and Lyra" Arthur interrupted me and my finger stopped over the end call button
"I am planning to kidnap Victoria tonight" he said
"Let me know when you're done" i said and ended the call
Its too much to handle, i need at least one confirmation- i realized as i picked up the phone again and dialed her number
"Hey Lyra" Melissa answered calmly
"Hey Melissa, can you meet me tonight?" I asked her, quickly getting to the point
"Yea, is anything wrong?" She asked me, worriedly
"Nope, just want you to catch up onto things" i said and she gave me an address soon enough
After completing the last of my work, i headed outside
The office was rather empty and it was pretty dark outside, so I quickly walked to my car
I swung the file on the passenger seat, then shifted the car gear to drive, and the car came to life
Soon, i was pulling to the restaurant that Melissa had given me the address of
"Thats one fancy restaurant" i said as i parked and followed my eyes to the busy street, where people were waiting to get in
As i walked to the front, a man behind a podium looked at me
"Name?" He asked me
"Lyra Lembarti" i said and he quickly skimmed at the list before breaking into a smile
"Ms Lembarti, your table is ready" he waved to a hostess who led me to the table
I soon saw Melissa and she got up when she saw me
"Hey" she hugged me and soon, we were both settled down and placing our orders
After the hostess left, Melissa looked at me expectantly
"So" she said and i looked at her, trying to read her mind for some reason
"So i went to the office today" i started the story
"And?"
"And i saw a rather peculiar business proposal from someone completely unexpected" i said
Upon hearing this, Melissa raised an eyebrow and i bit my lip
"Jacob?" She soon realized and i nodded
Her eyes widened in surprise and she quickly turned away
"Do you know anything about it?" I asked her but she didn't meet my eyes
"No" she said
"I'm sorry I'm just embarrassed, I didn't expect him to do this" she said and i smiled
"Its okay, i just wanted you to know in case he bought it up later" i said trying to calm her down
"I'm going to ask him about it" she said, finally meeting my eyes
"Just don't make it too obvious" i said and she smiled
Soon, we shifted our conversation to lighter subjects and our conversation was interrupted by our dinner
"Thanks" i said as the hostess put my order down and left
Just when i was about to pick up my fork, my vibrating phone caught my attention
"Who is it now" i muttered as i picked up the phone
"Lyra" Arthur's deep voice came through the end and I stiffened
In front of me, Melissa had also stopped eating and was looking at me worriedly
"Whats wrong?" I asked him and he didn't speak for what seemed like hours
with every second, my heart was beating faster and I couldn't ignore the weird feeling in my heart
"Victoria's dead"
