FLASHBACK

Hidden in the depths of my mother's closet, I hurl my hands to canopy my ears. I have to block this out, I can't listen to it anymore. My chest is heaving, I can't breathe, it's like a ton of bricks have been planted on my chest. I thought this was over. I thought he left years ago. I don't wish to heed this argument. I'm frozen, unable to move with the fear of what will come next. I remember this all too well.

The muffled noises of their words creep closer. It's always dreadful but he hasn't been here for a long time, I thought things would improve without him in the house, but I was sorely mistaken. Why didn't I attend to my classes today? This is what I inherit for ditching school and returning home to change my clothes. If I would've made my appearance at school, I wouldn't be here to audibly witness this ... again.

I think I can make it to my room, I have to escape without being noticed. My feet take step by fearful step towards the door, my shaking hand turns the nob in the slowest of motions, I slip passed the closet door and I hear the stomps of feet running my way.

I try to bolt as fast as I can but just as I'm about to dash into my room, she comes rushing into the hall headed directly for me. I scramble back in the closet, closing the door behind me before she has the opportunity to see me. Seconds later she scurries into her room, slamming the door behind her.

The closet door is ajar, I reach for the handle at a slower pace than intended and close the door without a creak. I hear her muffled communication, "Please no! Please just go. I don't want this anymore." I hear my mom scream at the top of her lungs. I jump at the sound of the door being pummeled by the person behind it, my father I think. BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG! Hearing the ruckus on the door scares me, I back up in the closet and grab one of the blankets to shelter my ears.

"Open the door Kaye!" I hear the faint voice roar. He's been gone for years, why is he back? I slug to the back of the closet, scared, hearing the loud brawl against my mother's bedroom door. BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, he keeps crashing on the entryway.

My heart races, I know what comes next, we've been through this before. I'm terrified, my body goes into a state of shock, it's immobility inevitable. A loud crash booms in the room, I can hear pieces of the door land everywhere. Shit!

My mother screams the most gut wrenching, horrible scream I've ever heard, it makes me want to scream just as loud, but I cover my mouth not to give away my location. I hear the stifled sound of a pop, hand hitting flesh and the cries that spill from my mother's mouth.

"Please no, no. Please I'm begging you. Not again, please," I listen to my mother's murmured beg. I hear a thud and the sound of my mother wincing at the constant connection. I know exactly whats happening and can't postulate we are experiencing this all over again. I crawl like a turtle to the door, place my trembling hand on the handle, I begin to turn the nob, the door gives a small sight into the room and to my horrid eyes ...
