Midori and i sat on the grass
while Zuzu ran endlessly through bushes and trees
saliva flying past her outstretched tongue.
i wiped the sweat off my face with my shirt
Midori plucked at the grass.
"i live three blocks away," she said.
"where did you live before here?" i asked, watching as she snapped a twig.
"london. we move a lot because of my uncle's work."
i noticed a bitterness as she spoke of her uncle.
i wondered,
did she lose a parent too?
i didn't want to intrude so i didn't ask, instead asked if she liked it here in japan.
"it's okay. the language barrier is difficult though."
i nodded.
i was only half japanese - my mother was mongolian
but at least i spoke the language.
"good thing the international school teaches in english then," i commented.
my dad sent me to the school to learn english so that i could get further than he did overseas.
but i didn't want to get further.
"yeah, but my first language is dutch," she laughed half-heartedly.
i looked at her in surprise then sadness.
both of us are somewhere we don't want to be.
