i kept my hand against the car window until it started moving.
i couldn’t kiss her goodbye in front of her uncle
but we’d had our own farewell earlier.
her aunt gave me a huge hug
promising to come and visit
but i knew it wouldn’t happen.
i kept up appearances
smiled at her aunt and uncle
politely waved.
but when the car started moving
i couldn’t let go of the damned window.
my last image of her was
mixed with my reflection in the glass
an expression of pain
and desperation
slowly pulling away
until i could see her no more.
eventually i wasn’t fast enough to run after it
and i gave up.
i crumpled to the icy ground
and cried for everything i’d lost.
さようなら。
[ さようなら (sayounara): goodbye ]
