ROSEANNE

My brows furrow as I skim through the pages of my textbook.

I have a test tomorrow, but for some reason, I can't concentrate.

I stopped trying to read the textbook after I realized that I was reading the same sentence for the fourth time without even understanding what I was reading.

There is a knock on my door before I hear a voice. "Sweetie, dinner is ready. Are you coming down?" My dad says.

At the mention of dinner, I feel my heart drop.

I skipped dinner last night, claiming that I was too tired.

They wouldn't believe me if I used the same excuse again. Nathan was also here, and I knew he would make me come down.

I had no choice. Not unless I wanted my parents to find out.

Turning to the door, I answer. "Dad, I'll be down in a few."

"Alright sweetie, don't take too long." He says and I close my book. Getting up from the chair I walk towards the door.

I take a deep breath before opening the door of my room.

From here I could smell the dinner mom made.

I wanted to take a step out of my room, but I couldn't. I was frozen in place. No matter how much I tried to move, my feet wouldn't budge.

As I stood there, I could hear the voices.

You're worthless.

Why eat? You're already a waste of space.

Nobody wants you. Not even your own family.

My breathing becomes strangled as I try to breathe. "Please stop." I shut my eyes close.

The voices.

I couldn't fight the voices, they're much stronger than me.

And no matter how much I tried to fight them, they always won.

"Rose?" The voice of my brother snaps me out of my reverie.

My blurry eyes snap up to him as he looks down at me with worried eyes.

"I'm scared." I rasp out.

"Oh Rose," He mumbles. I watch as Nate slowly extends his hand and grasps mine. "I'm here okay, they are not here. They can't hurt you as long as I'm here."

Giving my hand a small squeeze, he slowly pulls me out of my room.

He's right,

They weren't here.

Not physically.

But their voices were.
