A Second Chance

chapter six

Marks POV (SPECIAL POV)

"Mark" I heard a whisper

"Mark" the person whispered again this time tapping my shoulder.

I bolted up realising the person waking me up was Callie.

"What happened? Is she alright?" I speedily asked

There was a moment of silence

"Mark, Lexie's surgery went well. She did outstandingly well." Callie said

I smiled a huge relief escaped my shoulders. Callie walked me back to Lexie's room and my smile ever left my face. I stood at her doorway she was still slightly loopy but she was slowly coming out of her sleep.

Lexie's POV

I was slowly starting to wake up the feeling in my limbs was coming back to me. I turned my head from my window slowly to face the doorway. That's when I saw a Mark he was smiling from ear to ear. I slowly smiled back and he walked in taking a seat on the chair next to my bed.

"You're alive" he spoke with a huge sigh of relief

I nodded smiling as he stroked my forehead.

"You are the bravest person and the most beautiful person I have ever laid eyes on"

I chuckled "thanks" I slowly spoke

That's when I noticed. My voice was coming back! Mark's face was frozen.

"Say that again," he asked

"Thanks," I said a bit louder

"I can speak again!"

"Aww Lex, you're amazing"

My heart skipped a few beats.

It had been a few hours later. Mark still hadn't left my side even though I insisted him to go home and get proper sleep. He said that he'd prefer the couch in my room and I knew that wasn't true but I couldn't force him to leave me. I had dozed on and off for the past few hours. It's so hard to get proper sleep in the hospital room. All I hear is the monitor's beep every second and not to mention I cannot move so I am stuck on my back which is the worst possible sleeping position ever. But I have to put up with it at least for now. Eventually, I was able to doze off again but only for an hour because I was rudely awakened with the 6 am rounds. The bright lights turned on in my room and Callie, Miranda and a few interns came in to check up on me.

"How's everything Lexie?" Callie asked walking over and examining my legs

"It's alright. I am getting my voice back with is good but it's terrible to sleep" I confessed

"Well we can't help you with your sleeping. However, your legs are healing perfectly which is something to be happy over" Callie spoke putting the blanket back on my legs

"And your vitals look strong. You're looking good Lexie" Miranda added

"I'm glad" I smiled

"How's the sleepyhead?" Callie asked

"He slept better then I did but I did insist he go home and sleep but he wouldn't leave me" I spoke looking at a sleepy Mark

"Obviously he wouldn't leave you. Not after last time. He's in this forever"

I smiled staring at Mark as he slowly woke up

"What's going on?" He questioned looking and my and the other doctors

"6 am rounds Sloan" Miranda spoke

"Oh right I should get to work" he spoke as he got up

"You passed your therapy session?" I asked locking eyes with him

"Yeah I did. I just didn't tell you because you were my priority"

I was glad to hear that he could work again. I was just sad that I couldn't work and if Mark got the clear that probably means Meredith, Cristina, Arizona, and Derek all got the clear too which only saddened me more.

Callie, Miranda, and the other interns left the room as Mark got changed into his scrubs.

"Have fun today" I said mopy and saddened

"I would be having more fun if you were working with me too" he confessed sitting on my bed

"I know. But enjoy your day at work"

"I will Lex. I promise though I will come in every hour to check up on you and see if you need anything" he spoke holding up his pinky

I locked my pinky with his

"Pinky promise?" I asked

"Pinky promise"

We both kissed our thumbs and locked them together creating the pinky promise. Mark left and went on to do his work. The day went by slowly Mark didn't break his promise though every hour he came in and talked with me for 10 minutes or more depending on what he had to do in that hour. I was thankful that he came in. I was also visited by Meredith and Derek, Cristina, April and Jackson, Alex and Jo and Arizona they all talked with me for a long while before they went back to work. I constantly stared at the window that showed me the reception desk. I would always see someone I knew collecting a patient's charts, preparing for surgery, or just talking to one another and I missed that. I just wanted to get back to my normal life. I was sick of being in bed all the time.

The evening had come around and I was glad. Today was a lonely day besides my occasional visits from my friends and hourly visits from Mark. I loved them so much but I was annoyed at the freedom they all had whilst I was sitting in a hospital bed not even being able to move. 

"Hey" Mark spoke as he entered my room

"Hi" I smiled back and sat up

He joined me at my beside rubbing my hands and spoke

"Karev invited me and the gang for drinks tonight to welcome us back after everything and I was going to go but you're my priority" 

I smiled happy that he didn't forget about me but I felt guilty that I was holding him back from outings with his friends. 

"Go, go have fun with everyone. You deserve it after everything that has happened"

"Are you sure Lex?"

"I am one hundred percent sure. Go have fun and get a good nights sleep in your home" I said the last sentence sternly 

He chuckled "thanks"

We shared a kiss and I watched him walk out the door. I was happy that he was able to get out of this hospital and finally do something after months of looking after himself and me. But, I missed seeing everyone and all the times we would hang out at work and after work. It made me depressed but I can't do anything to fix it.
