A Second Chance

chapter fourteen

Today was going to be one of the most exciting days in a longtime.

I was finally going back to work! Sure, it wasn't the typical fast paced surgical emergencies I was used to but I was happy to be going back.

Mark and I entered the hospital hand in hand, he dropped me off to the changing rooms. I walked into the room and everything felt different. I was a year behind my workmates because of the injury. They were already half way through their fellowship where I was beginning mine. But I wasn't going to let that get the best of me. I placed my bag in my locker and changed into my scrubs and sneakers. My hair was left waving down my back.

Once I finished getting ready I joined my collegues at the nurses station and we waited for our assignments. As we were waiting I spotted a brunette girl a metre away from me. She looked familiar, like I had met her before. I bit my lip trying to put a name to the face but I couldn't. Soon enough, the Chief came over with Meredith, Alex, Cristina, and April who were already attendings as well as Callie, Mark, and Derek. Chief divided us into the intern group which included several men and women as well as the brunette who I couldn't figure out their name. The resident group and the fellowship group which had some familiar faces. All these doctors had already begun their intern, residency, and fellowship years. I had completed my intern and residency years but I had to start fresh all by myself with my fellowship.

The Chief assigned us to an attending, one by one the doctors left to meet up with an attending. I prayed that Derek would be my attending as I was very intrigued in specialising in neuro, which the Chief already knew.

I was the last to be sorted with an attending, all of the groups looked full.

"Grey" Chief spoke and I looked up

"You're with Dr. Sloan" The Chief added

My heart sank a little bit. I was glad to be with Mark but why? the Chief knew I was very keen to study under Derek and have a speciality in neurology. I was confused but joined Mark and his group.

Mark began splitting us into groups and handing out case files which I was excused from. I moved to the side out of the way and let Mark do his thing, whilst he was talking the Chief pulled me to the side.

"I understand you are very excited Dr. Grey. But if you ever need a rest or time to sit down please do not hesitate, we don't need you to get hurt more. understand?"

I nodded "completely Chief"

The Chief smiled and I smiled back as he walked away. I turned to face my group as Mark was wrapping up his speech. Slowly, one by one the miniature groups went off to do rounds and help out in the pit. By the end it was Mark and I left.

"so what's my assignment?" I asked Mark as he read his notes

"you're with me" he spoke and looked up from his notes

"um okay, but Chief said I have to be doing labs and don't you have surgeries?" I asked

"I do" he said closing his notepad "but this way you can stick by my side and I can watch over you and whist I'm doing surgeries you can watch in the gallery"

I nodded my head "okay"

I followed Mark as he headed to his first patient.

I loved that I was getting to work with Mark, but plastics is not as interesting to me as it was when Mark and I were secretly dating. I wish I was on Dereks service. I wished I was able to study neuro. But this is okay, for now. I hope tomorrow I will be on Dereks service.
