Title: Joke? Joke.

Topic: When jokes become offensive

Written By: amlorrz

Have you ever been offended by a joke? A joke is created to entertain people but is it really half meant and half lie? Joke is something people laugh about. Some people use jokes in a way to hurt other people, especially the people they don’t like. But there is that big question we ask, “why do they always use joke to hurt people?” and “when does a joke becomes offensive?”

Bullying. I could say that using joke to offend people is bullying. It may not be physical but it’s mental. Most people, when they know the saying, “Joke is half meant and half lie” they would think of your joke always especially if negative to them. Like telling them they stink in a form of a joke, they would become conscious of their scent. Don’t you just hate people like that? I mean, it’s okay for them to offend you but when you offend them back, they’ll get mad or something. Seriously? Joke is created for fun, yes, but using it in a negative way is so across the line. Also, most jokes become offensive when it is about you in a negative way or in short, you got hurt. Example is, kapag may quiz kayo at ikaw lang ang may mababa na score at sasabihan ka nila na “ang bobo mo kasi” simple words but it hurts a lot. Is there really a person who is not smart? No, they aren’t. And when you get mad at them because of their jokes, sasabihin nila “joke lang naman yun eh”. Yun na nga, joke lang, pero hindi nila alam na nakakasakit na sila dahil hindi sila ang sinasabihan at hindi rin sila ang kinakausap. Tatawa ng tatawa sila habang ikaw nasasaktan na. That is when a joke becomes offensive.

Para malaman nila na nasasaktan ka na, dapat mo silang pagsabihan na ang ginagawa nila ay hindi na tama pero kung hindi parin sila titigil, ignore them. “ang gaba dili magsaba” as what we, bisaya, say. “ang karma na ang bahala sa inyo” remember, ignore the people who destroys/offends you, they’re not worth of your time.
