Chapter twenty-three

Jasper and Emmet were training when Bella and Edward had arrived. "Again!" Emmet yelled when he got up after getting thrown.

Edward and Bella stood beside of Carlisle after they had exited the vehicle. The wolves appeared soon after. The vampires, and Bella, all turned to look at the wolves.

"They don't trust us enough to be in their human forms." Edward said, glancing at Carlisle.

"They came, that's what matters. Will you translate?" Carlisle answered before stepping forward.

"Welcome. Jasper has experience with the newborns, he will teach us how to defeat them."

"They wanna know how the newborns differ from us." Edward translates after reading the wolves' heads.

"They're a great deal stronger than us because their own human blood lingers in their tissues.
Our kind is never more physically powerful than in our first several months of this life." Carlisle answers them. He then turns to look at Jasper, nodding his head slightly. He looked at Ophelia WHI gave him an encouraging thumbs up.

"Carlisle's right, that's why they are created. A newborn army doesn't need thousands like a human army. But no human army can stand against them." Jasper starts, his eyes glancing between the wolves and his family. "There's two important rules that you must remember in order to defeat them. First never let them get their arms around you, they'll crush you instantly."

"The second, never go for the obvious kill, they'll be expecting that and you will lose." He continued. "Emmett!"

Emmett took a stance a few feet away from
Jasper who held a smirk on his features.

"Don't hold back." Jasper tells him.

"Not in my nature." Emmett smirks before jumping at him. The two sparred for about two minutes, jumping and spinning in the air, occasionally falling but Jasper won. Ophelia clapped. Rosalie glared playfully at the brunette.

Next was Carlisle and Edward. He nods his head at Edward and then the two run for each other. Edward jumped over the older vampire when he slid under the latter's legs. Edward got flipped over after a few seconds of fighting but got the upper hand and pinned his father to the ground.

"One more thing." Edward looked at Jasper expectantly. Letting his guard down, Carlisle bounced up and got Edward pinned to the ground, officially winning. "Never turn your back on your enemy." Jasper said with a 'duh' tone of voice.

Up next to train was Ophelia and Jasper. He nodded his head at her before he threw a hit that she had quickly dodged. Jasper smirked at her before going to throw another hit, spinning around as Lia ducked under his arms. He lunged at her and she hopped out of the way in a fast movement. He threw another hit that she dodged and then one more which she spun underneath him again. This resulted in him grabbing onto her shoulders and stopping her by doing that. He put his hand on her chin and leaned in to kiss her but she quickly spun out of his arms and disappeared. Jasper swished his head around to find her and out of nowhere she quickly jumped from the tree above him and landed on his back. He turned his head to look at her before the two shared a quick peck.

"Alright, we're done for the day." Jasper told the family and the wolves. The wolves backed up slowly then disappeared into the trees.

Jasper had been walking past the Jeep Bella was sitting on top of when she grabbed his attention. "Jasper, are you sure there's nothing I can do to help?"

Jasper turned his head to acknowledge her before turning his body to completely face her. "Well, your presence alone, your scent will distract the newborns. Their hunting instincts will take over, drive them crazy." He explained.

"Good, I'm glad." Bella said with the slight nod of the head. Bella turns back to Jasper, taking note of the small smile that was on his face. "Hey, how do you know so much about this?"

Jasper turned his head to look at her again. "I didn't have quite the same upbringing as my adopted siblings." Jasper answered her. Jasper takes the jacket off his arms to reveal the bites that were covering them. Bella jumps down from the jeep to look at them closer.

"Those bites are like mine."

"Battle scars." Jasper corrected her with a smirk. "All the training the confederate army (a/n ew) gave me was useless against the newborns. Still, I've never lost a fight." He started to walk away, Bella quickly followed him

"Hey, this happened during the Civil War?" Bella asked. Jasper smirked at her.

"Was the youngest major in the Texas Cavalry.
All without having seen a real battle."

"Until. . . ?"

"Until I met a certain immortal, Maria." He said her name through clenched teeth. "I was riding back to Galveston after evacuating a colony of women and children when I saw them. I immediately offered them my aid."

"Maria was creating an army?" Bella asked with a frown playing on her lips. By now, the two had stopped walking.

Jasper looked at her. "They were very common in the south. Constant brutal battles for territory.
Maria won 'em all. She was smart, careful and she had me. I was her second in command, my ability to control emotions served her well.
Emma and I trained her newborns, but in this occupation, since she never let them live beyond the first year, it was our job to dispose of them as well. I could feel everything they felt." A frown fell on his features. "I thought what Maria and I had was love..." His eyes filled with tears that would never fall. "But I was her puppet, she pulled the strings.

"I decided to go on my own in the 40's. I didn't know there was another way, till i found Ophelia. Now, Alice had seen me coming of course."

"You kept her waiting long enough." Alice said with a smile. Ophelia walked out from behind her.

Jasper smiled at this before he turned his head to look at the girl. "My apologies ma'am." He wrapped an arm around her. "I don't know what I'd become without her."

Ophelia shook her head. "Shh. you never have to be that again."

Bella smiled at this and was about to walk away but noticed she could ask Ophelia her story.

"What about you, Ophelia?"

"Oh. Well Alice and I have the same story." She responded while she clung to Jasper. Bella raised an eyebrow to this.
