The next morning I woke up early, the first glimpses of sunlight just cresting over the horizon.

it makes sense- i was out for awhile

of course i would wake up early now

we were out pretty late last night

I rolled over, Ymir was still asleep on the other side of the bed, unbothered by all of the shifting around I was doing.

they're all going to be hungover

come to think of it-

i don't think i've been alone in a couple of days

"I'm going out," I whispered to no response, before quietly getting out of bed and heading out onto the deck.

it's quiet

On land, I could see a few storeowners setting up shop for the day and across the way the crew of a different ship was preparing to head out.

peaceful

From where my bedroom was back at home I could see a similar scene outside my window, albeit way more zoomed out.

in some ways its a little bit like my situation now

i dreamed of doing this for so long in that same room

and now i'm here

it's a little scary

it's a lot scary

I wandered over to a stack of crates, sitting down so that I could look out over the endless expanse of blue ocean occasionally interrupted by a passing ship or seabird diving for something deep below.

it's been fun playing around with ymir and her crew but-

i need to start thinking about my plan

a lot has changed now that i know what my father told reiner's family

he's maintaining the story that i was kidnapped

so my return to society is going to have to be spectacular

"What are you moping about?" A familiar voice startled me out of my thoughts.

"I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do to prove myself," I hummed, turning to look at Ymir. "Any ideas?"

"You could always run away forever," she chuckled, taking a seat beside me.

not really

"You would like that wouldn't you?"

"I would- humor me?"

"I have to go home eventually- besides it feels like I'm proving his point if I just run away and never come back."

i know that i don't owe him anything

but i would like to be able to stand on my own two feet without support for my father or ymir

i miss my friends so i could never stay away for that long anyway

"Shame," she hummed, pulling me closer to her side. "So? What's the plan."

"I'm not entirely sure yet," I frowned, "I know that there's a large social gathering at the end of the month, my brother was supposed to come home for it."

that would be a great time to prove myself in front of an audience

the issue is finding something to prove myself with in such a limited time

my father isn't going to be happy if i just report back that i've become a bookkeeper for a woman with a problematic reputation

"Hey," she nudged my side, "don't worry too much about it- you can always just enter an exclusive contract with me."

you shouldn't just throw around something like that

"That would be amazing but- it in no way benefits you."

i would love if you worked for me but i have absolutely nothing for you to do

"We can work something out-" Ymir was eager to please.

"Ymir you and your crew trade exotic good and other items that are difficult to get around here right?"

i'm aware that some of that is done illegally

"We do, only on commission though- I have no interest in running my own business," she shrugged, leaning back.

"Why not?"

"Is that really a question? You've seen my office, I'd much rather spend my life exploring than behind a desk."

that makes sense

"Have you ever thought about it?"

"Plenty of times, I mean it would be helpful to have a base of operations- and someone to deal with the technical side of things."

sounds like there's a but in that sentence

"-I'm not sure how it would work out," Ymir paused, "are you offering?"

im not opposed at all

"You know what that means-" I poked her gently, "this really can't last forever."

"Nonsense, it's just a reason for me to come back."

"Why do you think it won't work?" I redirected the conversation.

"Well for starters- only a select few are able to buy what we have to offer, the only reason we profit now is that we charge a large fee, I don't think that would be sustainable for a different business model."

she's right

but what if-

what if we took advantage of your resources and applied them somewhere you've never thought of

"Wouldn't it cut down costs if you were able to transport raw materials instead of finished products?"

if i understand it correctly-

half of the costs that ymir and her crew have to account for are the costs of labor

they don't have the ability to make what their clients are asking for so they ship it out to third parties

"Sure but no one wants to buy the raw materials, and it isn't like I have a workshop of people at my disposal."

but what if you did

"I think I know what I can do for you."

"I'm excited to watch you try."
