The snow fell steadily on to the ground, leaving thick and heavy layers of the white fluff to cover the sidewalks. At this point, there was no purpose in even trying to leave the house, for it was obvious that there was no hope in getting out of the driveway. Sadly, for me, this meant having to wait even longer to see my fiance, Mikey. Sure, I had asked for a white Christmas, but I did not mean this.

I dragged myself throughout my house. I was still wearing my fancy red dress and had been waiting long enough to see if the weather would stop, that I was contemplating whether or not to take off the clothing. My train of thought, though, stopped immediately when the newscaster said that we were in for another eight inches of snow and ice. With this announcement, I dragged myself up the stairs to take off my dress.

From that moment on, my Christmas night was bleak; I watched two cliché Christmas movies, ate a whole box of decorative chocolates, and spent the remainder of the time curled up on the couch under a warm blanket. I wished I had been able to spend my night with the person I loved, and I wished that we had been able to carry out the plans we had. Yet, I knew that I was just giving myself false hope.

I was nearly asleep when I heard a quiet 'tap' on my door. I knew that everyone had been alerted to stay off of the roads, so I was confused about who it could be. Could it be Mikey, the one who I had been longing to see?

Slowly, I made my way over to the door. The wind was extremely loud outside, and although a voice in my mind told me to just go back to the warm couch, my hand still opened the door. The cold instantly infiltrated my home as my hair whipped around me. I looked around in the darkness.

No one was there.

Extremely confused, I shut the door and went back to the couch. Just as I did so, I heard a mysterious 'tap' come from my window. Surely enough, when I looked over to where I heard the noise, the curtains that surrounded the window were whirling in the air like the window was open. But the window wasn't open, and there seemed to be no explanation as to why the curtains were doing this.

I went over to the window and opened it. This time, unlike the last, something was there. A dark raven flew into my home and perched itself upon my fireplace. I stared at it in awe. What was it doing? Why was it here? I then remembered that in older times people used birds to carry messages. I wondered if this bird was carrying a message to me from Mikey.

"Raven," I asked. "Do you have a message from my fiance, Mikey?"

The raven stared at me. It almost looked as though it was tipping its head to the side like a dog does when it is confused. Then, to my horror and surprise, it said, "nevermore."

"What do you mean 'nevermore'? Is that the message? If so what does it mean?" I queried in a daze.

Yet again, the bird stared into me, fire in its eyes. "Nevermore."

"Raven," I boomed, not realizing I was yelling. "Devil or angel answer my question!"

Quoth the raven, "Nevermore."

Then, with sudden haste, smoke seemed to fill the air. My mind clouded and thoughts confused, I seemed to see great and shining seraphs float into my house in every way possible. I felt myself falling, and falling, and falling...

Yet still, in all my confusion, I could hear the raven quietly quote, "nevermore."
