That afternoon in Brexton, Alexandra's steps led her back to her father's house. As she arrived, the air was thick with a mix of anticipation and trepidation. Emily, the one person who seemed to be a bridge between her and her father, greeted her with a warm smile. "Alexandra, it's good to see you. Please come in. Would you like a cup of tea?"

Alexandra hesitated at the threshold before cautiously stepping inside. Her eyes swept over the familiar interiors that carried memories of both happiness and turmoil. She cleared her throat, her voice soft. "Is Jacob home?"

Emily's reply was swift. "He's just feeding the horses. He'll be back shortly."

The confusion was evident on Alexandra's face. "Horses?"

Emily's smile grew wider. "Yes, I'm a competitive horse rider, and Jacob had stables built on the property for me. He's been quite supportive."

She couldn't help but feel uneasy at the thought of her childhood home undergoing such significant changes. She hesitated for a moment before finally asking, "Do you mind if I have a look around? It's been a while, and I'd like to see what's changed."

As they began to walk through the house together, Emily's apologetic tone was heartfelt. "I hope I'm not making you uncomfortable, Alexandra. We redecorated the place recently. Jacob decided he wanted a fresh start, especially now that he's celebrating being four years sober."

The news struck Alexandra like a lightning bolt, catching her off guard. Four years sober? She hadn't expected this revelation, and a whirlwind of emotions churned inside her. Jacob, the man she had distanced herself from, seemed to be trying to rebuild his life, a life she had chosen to step away from.

Alexandra forced a small smile. "It's just... seeing the house like this is a bit overwhelming. It's different from how I remember it."

As they moved, Alexandra's gaze caught a picture on the wall – a candid moment frozen in time. It was a photograph of Jacob and Emily at a park, a young boy laughing joyfully as he perched on Jacob's shoulders.

The sight of the photograph sent a wave of confusion through Alexandra. She stopped in her tracks, her eyes fixed on the image. "Who's that?"

As the weight of the question hung in the air, Jacob stepped into the room with a calm demeanor. "Alexandra, it's good to see you," he greeted, his tone even and measured.

Jacob turned his attention to Emily. "Brodie's up to her usual tricks," he said with a hint of amusement. Emily laughed.

"Those horses." she sighed. "I'll go see them later. Tea?" she offered. Jacob nodded, and Emily quickly excused herself, leaving Alexandra and Jacob alone in the room. The atmosphere was charged, emotions unspoken but felt by both.

Jacob motioned for Alexandra to join him in the lounge. She followed, her tension palpable, her steps cautious as if bracing for the unexpected.

As they walked, Jacob couldn't help but notice the unease that radiated from Alexandra. It was as if she was expecting the man she remembered, the man who had caused her pain, to emerge at any moment. He walked with deliberate steps, giving her space, but his presence seemed to cast a long shadow in the room.
