At the emptiness of it all
and at the desperate attempts
of the many to get where you are
—you must be laughing
At the expense of
the people beneath you
and at the shameless time
it took for them to climb
—you must be laughing
From your throne
at the top of the world
and from your place
as the hero of men
—you must be laughing
At the other miserable people
who were never you
and at those who spent
their lives trying to be like you
—you must be laughing
At the helplessness of some
and at the wishes of those
who never had anything netter
—you must be laughing
At fate's choice of picking
you to be at the top
and at destiny's will
to let you stay there
—you must be laughing
At the emptiness of it all
and at the loneliness
singing in your heart
—through everything—
you must be laughing
