Chapter 2

•Alex's P.O.V•

"Man, today was awesome!" I said as I got into the house.

It was late in the afternoon when I waved the last of my friends goodbye. The sun was already setting and the sky turned a pretty orange. I was exhausted. After we left the house this morning, the first place we went to celebrate me turning fifteen was the ice rink. I always loved ice skating, and I didn't mind the cold at all. In fact, I barely felt it. Then we drove off to play a seemingly endless game of lazer tag, which I won. Then we went to lunch at a pizza hut and got to make our own pizza. After that we went to the arcade down the street from there, where my friends and I won a bunch of plushies with the tickets we gathered. Finally, we went to watch a movie I've been dying to see since the first trailer came out a week ago. What added to the excitement was the fact that it was premiering today. After that all my friends went home, and dad drove me back to mine. In other words, this was the best birthday I've ever had.

"I'm glad you think so Alex." My dad said walking in the house behind me. Once I got to the living room I flopped onto the couch facing the ceiling.

"I'm exhausted. I don't know if I have the energy to stand up." I sighed staring up at the ceiling.

"Not even for cake?" I heard my dad ask from the dining room.

I sat up and looked towards the dining table where I saw my dad holding a cake in his hands. It was a fairly large cake covered with red orange and yellow icing and small flames on the sides. On the top of the cake was a picture of me and dad when I turned fourteen last year in icing. On it was written 'Happy Birthday Alex' right next to a '15' birthday candle. It was beautiful. I instantly got up and walked over to my dad, grinning wide. He set the cake down on the table and I hugged him tight.

"Thanks dad. This was the best birthday I've ever had." I said softly.

"No problem son." He said as I felt his arms wrap around my body. We both let go a second later.

"Ready to make a wish Alex?" My dad asked nodding to the candle. I nodded in response. "Alright then, let me get the lighter from the kitchen." He added before rummaging through the drawers.

I stared down at the cake for a second or two, admiring the amount of detail put into it before focusing on the candle. Then in a split second, it lit up.

"Did the candle just light itself!?" I stared at the small dancing flame in both amazement, and confusion. This couldn't be happening could it? I was snapped out of my thoughts just as my dad walked in with the lighter in hand.

"Okay I found the lighter-" he paused mid sentence when he noticed that the candle was already lit.

"Huh, you found the matches?" He asked. I looked down at the candle then back to my dad before replying;

"No. I just stared at it for a while and then, it just, lit itself."

He looked at me skeptically with a raised eyebrow, but once he realised I was being serious, his expression changed and he dropped the lighter.

"The binding spell is wearing off." He mumbled to himself almost too quietly for me not to hear. But I heard every word.

"Binding spell? Dad what's going on?" I asked. He looked at me with a scared expression but changed it abruptly.

"No, nothing! Nothing. I'm fine, everything's fine. I'm just thinking to myself, don't worry." He said trying to put on a smile. He didn't fool me.

"Dad, don't lie to me. What's wrong?" I said more sternly.

"It's, just one of those weird things happening again-"

"You mumbled something this morning. Something about me getting stronger or something. You had on the exact same expression you have now." I interrupted. Anger started to bubble up inside my chest and my chest and forehead were starting to get hotter.

"Alex, you have to believe me, I'm fine. Everything's fine. Something just crossed my mind, that's all." He said nervously.

"You're hiding something from me." I stated quietly.

"No, no I'm not!" He said quickly.

"Then why are you acting like this?" I asked angrily.

I knew dad never kept secrets from me, and neither did I. Not only was I now feeling angry, I felt hurt. The heat that I felt in my chest and forehead started to get hotter and hotter the angrier I felt.

"Alex, please just calm down." My dad said.

I didn't even notice that the candle's flame was a lot bigger than it was a minute ago until I felt it's heat on my skin. I looked towards the cake and the anger I felt washed away. It was replaced with a sharp pain in my head. I groaned and held the sides of my head in pain. I looked to the cake which was engulfed in flames. My eyes widened in horror.

"No, no, no, no, no! The cake!" I shouted.

I rushed over to the fire and tried blowing it out, as stupid of an idea as it was. But what else was I supposed to do? Watch as the fire slowly burn through the house on my birthday? I turned to where my dad was standing only to find that he wasn't there anymore. I noticed across the room in the kitchen that the flames on the stove were also lit, and danced around wildly. I also noticed our fireplace was also on fire despite there being no coal or wood in there. I stared in horror.

"DAD! DAD WHERE ARE YOU!?" I shouted at the top of my lungs. No reply.

"DAD!" I shouted again. )

I held my head as that sharp pain beat at my skull again, this time with twice as much force which made my head throb. I cried out in pain and fell to my knees, a tear falling down my face. I shut my eyes, hoping to wake up from this nightmare I was sure I was having. I opened my eyes slightly only to see my dad in the lounge with a fire extinguisher in his hand, trying to put out the flames in the fireplace. But it didn't look like it was working.

"Dad!" I managed to get out before dropping to the ground.

My exhaustion kicked in, and soon I didn't have enough energy to power through the pain, or keep my eyes open. My head hurt too much, the flames were getting wilder and I just lay there, not having a single clue what's going on or if there was anything I can do. But then I saw my dad's hands and eyes glowing red, and in an instant, all the flames shrunk and disappeared. I saw my dad rushing towards me, but my body finally gave in to the exhaustion and my eyes fell shut. Everything slowly went black as I barely heard my dad calling out my name over and over. Then after a few minutes, all I heard was silence, I couldn't feel anything. I was unconscious.
