EVERYTHING WAS GOING smoothly in the team building. There was no hitch on the way going to the venue. There was no hitch in the leadership seminar. There was no hitch in the team building activities. The only hiccups we had to deal with was Reynard creating an intrigue when Priam and Fabienne got out of the boy's room, and Alaric the Prick talking to Fabienne at lunchtime.

Even when everything was fine, I still got an uneasy feeling. Don't get me wrong. That Herald busybody did not bother Priam or Fabienne as much as I had thought he would. Alaric the Prick and his cohorts went along with our program.

Later today, I realized that I was looking at the wrong people. Hindi sa kanila galing ang gusot. Galing mismo sa mga kasama ko. I first felt that something was off when I learned that Valeria forgot the polo shirt for Fabienne. I dismissed it, thinking that was just a minor inconvenience. But come dinnertime, things escalated quickly. May away na palang nagbabadya sa mismong bakuran namin.

If we were in a ship, I'm the type of person who would make sure that our vessel did not have any holes—little or big—that could sink us before leaving the docks. Days ago, I talked to Valeria and assured her that she had nothing to worry about between Priam and Fabienne. It was fairly obvious that she had feelings for the president, and those feelings might get in the way.

Everything was just for a show. None of it was real. None of it was permanent. That's what she needed to realize and accept. I even counselled her to control her feelings every time it would come to bother her. That's why I thought I had already got that covered.

But boy, I was wrong.

I heard from someone in the girl's room that she and Fabienne had a verbal spat about Priam. Tension was high and voices were somewhat raised. If I were informed immediately and if I could act quickly, I would have resolved whatever issues they had. My damn left leg was acting up, my movement was limited.

Dinnertime came. Fabienne was obviously shaken. She was smiling but something was apparently wrong with her. Even Priam noticed it. Tinanong ko kung okay lang siya. She chose to lie and cover up for Val. Maybe she did not want to embarrass the vice president in front of the other USC officers, especially when we were having dinner.

I thought of running after her—though I could not really run—or ask Priam to check on her, but I decided to do neither. Maybe she needed some time to process what had happened. Maybe she preferred to be left alone at the moment.
