"Come on," Jacob pleads over the phone in his whiniest baby voice

"Come on," Jacob pleads over the phone in his whiniest baby voice. "It'll be fun. Plus, it wouldn't be the same without you."

"Jacob . . ." I trail off, biting down on my lip as I consider his proposition. "I don't know. I really need to be studying."

"I'll help you study when we get back," Jacob suggests. "Yeah! We can go hang out, then come home and study for the rest of the night. I've been told I'm a great study partner, you know."

"Is that so?" I tease. I run a hand through my dark hair, crossing my legs as I sit on my bed. I'm conflicted, fighting an internal battle with myself. Though I know I should be studying for this quiz I have coming up, I'd be lying if I said going out with Jacob didn't sound tempting. After all, I have been studying my ass off this past week. A little break can't hurt anything—and I do deserve to have some fun. Yet blowing off my studies for pleasure is very unlike me. Two months ago, I wouldn't even consider doing such a thing.

"It is extremely so," Jacob jokes in return. "Jace and Will keep biting my ear off, wondering when you're going to come back and visit them. It won't be like any of the other parties Will's frat has thrown before. It's supposed to be super lowkey. I just want to show up and say hi. We can leave whenever you want. Then I'll be yours for the rest of the night. So we can . . ." Jacob pauses for a moment. I can practically feel him smirking. "Study."

I groan into the receiver of my phone, tossing my psychology book away from me on the mattress as I lean back against the headboard. "You're incredibly convincing. You run a hard bargain, Beckham."

"You know you want to come," Jacob retorts smugly. "Just admit it."

"I do," I agree with a sigh. "But I also want to pass this class. The professor is tough, and I signed up for extra credits this semester. I need to be on my A game."

"I understand." Jacob falls silent for a moment. I can hear the gears turning in his mind, no doubt trying to come up with a way to seal the deal he's offering. "Ten minutes," Jacob says finally. "I'm asking for ten minutes."

I bite down hard on my lip. Cracking a smile, I groan once more. "Fine. Ten minutes. That's it, though. Okay?"

"Okay," Jacob eagerly agrees. I am certain he is beaming, proud of himself for breaking through my stubbornness and somehow managing to convince me to do what he wants. "I'll see you soon."

I hang up the phone, leaning against the headboard behind me and running my hands through my hair hastily. I shoot one last withering glance at my textbooks before rising from my bed, wandering over to the closet in the corner of my side of the room. I pull out a simple outfit, though it's a little nicer than anything I would typically wear. I then take a seat at my desk, studying my reflection in the mirror. I apply my usual mascara and concealer, hesitating when I spot the bottle of eyeliner sitting unattended on the desktop. I reach for it, recalling how much Jacob had liked the way it had looked the previous times I have worn winged eyeliner, which Kehlani has graciously taught me how to skillfully apply.

I'm smiling to myself as I exit my dorm, thoughts of studying having long since left my mind.
