"Father Lord, we bless your name for this great opportunity to take our seats at this dinner table once again as a complete family. We say be thou exalted in Jesus name." Mr Chuks voice rings out as the family responds. "AMEN!!!"
"Bless this food and let it nourish our bodies. In Jesus name we pray." "AMEN!!!"
Everyone opens their eyes and dig into the Akpu with Ogbono soup bowls.
"Who prepared this food?" Zephaniah asks licking his fingers. Jael raises up her head and looks at him squarely. "Who else? It's not as if you hired a chef. Or did you?" She retorts and turns to face her meal.
"Jael! Zephaniah is your older brother ooo. If he hits you I won't complain." Mrs Chuks chips in and resumes her food.
"Ehn? Him and who? You think I will just....." She is sharply cut off as Zechariah pinches her tightly. He immediately faces their father and speaks.
  "Dad!"
"Yes son."
"It's been a while since you called a compulsory dinner. What happened?"
"Well, that was what I thought Zephaniah was about to ask when he talked the other time. What happened exactly is that I wanted to talk right both of you. Infact, all of you."
The children immediately adjust their seats and pause their meals. Mr Chuks stops eating too and this immediately draws the attention of Mrs Chuks.
"You see, I feel that you children are now mature. You're old enough to actually have your own spouses and start preparing for your marriages. Even your sister, Jael, is old enough to get married just that this our Nigeria needs prayers. If not, why should Zechariah and Jael still be unemployed?"
Mrs Chuks immediately cuts in, "Zechariah is the only jobless person. Jael is already making her money even though it's little." The aged man sharply looks at her at gives her a deadly glare. She recoils and silently resumes her meal. Mr Chuks clears his throat and continues the discussion.
"So, I thought you guys were still feeling like little children and shying away from the issue of marriage. So children, I use this medium to tell you that you are free to start introducing your spouses to your mother and I. You are free to give your inputs."
Zephaniah immediately says something. "Well Dad, I have someone I'm engaged to actually. But I have been a little reluctant in bringing her home because I didn't know what your reaction would have been."
    "Well now you know."
"I will bring her over sometime."
Mrs Chuks is suddenly full of beams and smiles and joy. "That's my son." She says patting Zephaniah's back as he holds her hand.
"Zechariah?" Their father questions.
"Not yet Dad. Still consumed with getting a job. I can't decide to get married without having something to feed the family with, can I?"
"I understand you son. God will crown your efforts." The understanding father comments.
"Well, I don't understand. I need grandchildren as soon as possible oo." Mrs Chuks retorts. Zechariah nods in acknowledgement. Their father speaks us again this time facing Jael.
"You?"
"I don't have time Dad. Besides, I want to establish myself first." Jael responds.
"Okay. Just know that you're a lady and humility should be your watchword. No man will approach a proud lady."
"Yes Dad. Thanks." Jael replies and stands up slowly. "I'm done with my food. Excuse me."
"Please pack this for me too."
She stretches over the table and picks up the plates their father used. She slightly bends beside Zephaniah and whispers, "Don't forget that you have hands, legs and eyes . So don't call me to pack your plate." She gives him a fake smile and he scoffs in reply. Sha makes her way to the kitchen while Zechariah follows her shaking his head in laughter.
