Whumpee took a deep breath and set their face. They could do this. They would do this. Their hand shook as they reached for the door.

The familiar scent of candles and old wood wafted over Whumpee as horror grew in their stomach. They felt sick. They couldn't do this. They had to though. They were trying to face their fears of finally going into the church where they were hurt so long ago.

No one seemed to recognize them. That was good. They knew that as soon as they were recognized, they'd be silenced.

"Honey, are you lost?"

Whumpee whipped around to see their old Sunday School teacher looking concerned. As the frail woman stepped closer, Whumpee turned tail and ran out of the church. Bravery could wait for another day. They were NOT facing the woman who accused them of being a demon.
