(30) After Math

Thirty minutes after everyone arrived back at James and Winnie's house. Nikki felt her phone buzzing in her pocket. 

"Hello this Nicole." She said as she stepped outside 

"Hi Nikki it's Rosalyn  I know it's Christmas but we need you to come in." Rosalyn said 

"Okay. Yeah just let me get my girls settled and I'll be there." She said as she hung up. 

She went back inside she found her mom. "I've gotta go in. Rosalyn called me which means the other one refused to come in." She said 

"We got the girls baby. You go do your job." Alexandria said 

Nikki pulled her hair back into a braid. She found Bucky on the porch still trying to reach Emily. 

"Hey I've been called in.." she said 

"Can't someone else go in for you. I need you.." he said 

"Bucky they need me too. I'm more than just a nurse I got my bachelors in nursing. I'm aprn darlin and I need to go do my job." She said as she kissed his cheek. 

"Just keep me updated." She said as she walked to her car. 

She quickly made her way to the hospital stopping in their Starbucks by the ER. She changed in the locker room.

"What do we got?" She said 

"Well there was a accident. Two cars collided..two of them are about to be admitted up here while another one is being admitted on pediatrics." Rosalyn said 

"People need to learn to drive. Where did this happen?" She said 

"In front of the mall. Apparently one ran a red light and another hydroplanes when trying to swerve." Rosalyn said 

Once they were all admitted into their respective floors. Nikki took the charts. "Has the families been notified.." she said as she stopped.

"What is it Nicole?" Rosalyn said 

Nicole dropped the chart. "Nikki.." Rosalyn said 

"The one going to pediatrics..who is she?" She said 

"Her mother is Emily Barnes..she was in the backseat of her Altima." The resident said 

Nikki called Bucky. "Nikki..I thought you were working." He said 

"Has anyone called you?" She said 

"No..Nikki what's wrong? Oh wait that's her mother. Can I call you back?" He said as he saw who was beeping.

"James Sienna is here shes being admitted on the pediatric floor. Emily is on my floor that's all I know I just got the charts." She said 

"Oh god..no! Not my baby girl..please Nikki tell me she's okay." He said as tears welled as he ran to his truck. 

"I don't know I don't work peds." She said but he lost service as he ran to his truck.

Once he got service again he called his parents. Alexandria said she would stay with the kids while the family joined him. Nikki began to assess Emily. 

"What were you thinking driving off with her." She whispered 

She got Emily all hooked up to the ventilator and filled out her chart before leaving the room. Rosalyn allowed her to go down to the pediatrics. She found them in the waiting room. Bucky hugged her. 

"Has the doctor been in?" She said 

"Not yet. The nurse said they were running tests and X-rays." He said 

"How's Emily?" He said 

"It's not good. She's on the CCU floor." She said as she sat down. 

The doctor came in "Sienna Barnes family." 

"That's me I'm her father." He said 

"Your daughter is going to be fine. A broken arm and a concussion a few bumps and bruises other wise she's going to be fine." The doctor said 

"Thank you so much. Can I see her?" He said 

"Yes you can. Nurse Eugenie here will take you to her." The doctor said 

He checked in on Sienna she started wake up when he came in. "Daddy.." she whispered 

"Hey baby girl..what were you doing with her? I told you all not to go with her when she is upset like that." He said 

"I didn't know. I was in the bathroom I saw mom leaving I thought we were leaving. I asked her why the other two weren't coming she said that Ashlynn didn't want to leave and you wouldn't let her take Carter." She said 

"Mr Barnes. They are asking for you upstairs. You are your wife's POA." The nurse said 

Nikki led Bucky upstairs she stayed at the nurse's station as Emily's doctor explained that the accident wasn't entirely her fault. Emily had a brain aneurysm that burst while she was driving. They needed to make preparations and decide when they wanted to turn off the machines. It was to late to fix it.

Bucky had an argument with them cause they felt that he shouldn't get to make the decisions cause he hadn't been acting like her husband for the last three weeks. Nikki went into the room. 

"Shh..this is a hospital damn it. And this floor is quiet hours all the time. Now she is dying and right now isn't the time to be fighting over who can makes decisions and who can't. You need to remember she is a wife and a mother. So all of you need to grow up. He is still legally her POA and her husband so it is his decison." She said 

"I feel that we need to wait until the kids have said their goodbyes as well as the family. So within the next 24 hours. We should turn off the machines. She wouldn't want this." He said 

They all sighed. "Okay.." his father in law said 

Bucky followed her out and into an empty waiting room. "Bucky you said Sienna knew better than to get in a car when Emily's temper is riled up and you even said shew can't lose another one..what did you mean?" She said 

"It's not just about Matthew. When Emily was like 15 weeks pregnant right after we had Ash. She was pregnant with a baby girl but she and I had been fighting about money problems. She drove off leaving the kids at the shop with me. She got into a car accident cause she was so heated that she didn't see the light change. She miscarried our third daughter..so I always told the kids to never get in the car when she is like that." He said 

"Bucky I'm sorry.." she said as she cupped his cheek. 

"Nikki you are amazing you know that. And even though I'm very upset that you aren't teaching with me..you look good in scrubs. And I know I shouldn't say that cause my wife is dying but you do." He said 

She smiled at him. "You are horrible. What am I going to do with you? Your wife is dying and you are still trying to hit on me." She said 

He hugged her. "I've come along way from that shy boy you kissed on his front porch asking him to be your boyfriend." He whispered 

She smiled at the memory. "You have always been the bold one." He whispered as he kissed the top of her head. 

"I have to get back to work you can go back to Sienna now." She said 

"Okay.." he whispered as they went their separate ways. The following afternoon everyone said their goodbyes as Nikki turned off the machines.
