Interview Questions:

What inspired you to write this piece?

I have loved music ever since I was a little girl. From dancing with my Aunt to 90s pop, to watching 50s musicals with my Gramma, to my own piano practice, I was always surrounded by music. From the age of 5 I wanted to be a singer and from the moment I knew how to write I wanted to be a songwriter. But somehow, along the way, there were always people who brought me down, laid me low, tried to convince me that I could not do or be what I felt like I was called to be, and among those voices was my own inner thoughts and anxiety. I wanted to capture these facts and emotions into one song, triumphantly exploiting the fact that "there's no telling who I'm gonna be, I have a dream".

What does music mean to you?

Music is what I eat, breathe, sleep, think, how I communicate with the world. I only have my faith and family that mean more to me. I honestly need it. The world is so much more colourful and exciting with the songs that are dancing around in my head. They can help heal the heart and calm the mind. It's a language all can understand and everyone can relate to on some level. I don't know how other people survive without it. Music connects me to my past and helps me explain my present and celebrate the possibilities of my future. Music is something I can share with others, even others who are no longer with us, because it transports me to a place where I am with them again, even just for one beautiful moment. I could go on forever, honestly, but in conclusion, I feel like music is basically who I am, and on certain levels, it is my language, my addiction, my love, my therapist, my joy, my sorrow and my ambition! I feel like I was put in this world to share the gift that God gave us of music!

What do you love about performing?

I am never so alive as when I am performing something from deep inside my heart and soul. Whether it be a cover that resonates with me, or my own original work, I feel like I am truly living when the notes echo out from inside of me and go ringing out into the world to be received by whoever will listen and feel what I am trying to say. I love how there's a communication beyond the mere words and chords, something deeper, something magical, that you can't explain, you can't capture, you can only feel. The only thing that comes close to this is when you get to witness another person creating the magic for themselves.

Who/what are your major artistic influences?

As I said before, my aunt and her taste in music definitely influenced my early years, as well as musicals, hymns and classical music. As I got older (and currently), I'd say my biggest influences are Taylor Swift, how she creates the music in a way she wants to, not following trends (unless she wants to) or listening to "haters", she carves through and creates whatever she wants; Ed Sheeran, how his lyrics dictate his musical style, how is songs always seem to have a deeper message or theme he is trying to convey; and Adele, how she digs deep into her soul and captures the emotions you've only ever felt before, but now you can listen to them.
