Interview Questions:

Why did you choose to cover this song?

At this time, I was also going through a lot of emotional pain, and practicing this song was my outlet. The lyrics resonated with me because I am going through heartbreak at present. A person I like has left for abroad, and I cannot tell him how I feel. I felt I was sending a message to that person by singing this song.

I felt that by listening to my own cover of this song, I am also listening to my own feelings, and it helps me deal with them more properly. I am listening to all the love, the pain, the longing, the frustration, the disappointment, and most importantly the hope that one day, I will be able to move on.

What does music mean to you?

"I am the music, and music is me." This is the thought that comes to mind when I try to answer that question. The music is around me, as well as inside me. I see music as a language of notes, through which sentences of melodies are formed, by which we tell a story or a message in the form of a song or instrumental. And what's even better is this language is uniform to everyone, so music connects people in a way nothing else does.

Just like with books and novels, I find a teacher in music. Through songs such as "Miss American Pie" I learn about art, history, philosophy, psychology, love, friendship, and family. I learn about the world. I speak a foreign language. I live in one country but through music I can get a taste of the culture and language of another country, another race. I learn of an instrument I have never heard off. Through music I fall in love, get heartbroken, find hope, learn how to be stronger.

I also find a friend in music. There are thoughts and feelings that sometimes we are all too scared or or too guilty of, we cannot speak of them even to family or closest friends, much less to ourselves. Music is the friend that speaks of these things for me. When I hear Whitney Houston singing "I wanna run to you," I am the same woman who wants to run the man that I love. When I heard Taylor Swift singing "And if you ask me if I love him, I'd lie," I could never tell that boy how I feel because he likes someone else, but hearing those lyrics made me feel less lonely, because somewhere around the world is a girl my age who was going through the same thing I was and she was singing about it.

Music makes our relationships sound more romantic, our work less tedious, our friendship more binding and lasting, our lives less ordinary, our heartbreaks less painful and isolating, our past more poignant, our present more colorful, and our future more hopeful. I have never played an instrument, I am not in a professional singing group, but it does not matter. As long as I live and breathe, so does the music inside me, and so does my magical connection to the music to the rest of the world.

What do you love about performing?

I haven't performed for years, but years ago I joined the school choir. It was an accident, I was trying to help out a friend, I was her recruit, then I sang "A Broken Vow" by Laura Fabian and somehow got in. I was surprised that I made it because others got rejected. I was also clueless because I never had singing lessons or vocal training, so I considered backing out, but on second thought, decided to stay.

And I loved it. I loved singing in front of a crowd. There's a thrill and rush from the experience that made me want to do it more. I loved making music with other people using my voice. I loved the vocal and intellectual challenge of performing with everyone else. I am a shy person, so I am bad at talking to people, but when I look at them in the eye and sing, I am singing of their worship, of their love, or of their friendship, of Christmas songs so resonant with them, of their sadness or loneliness, of their dreams, of their hope and unfailing faith, and in that way I feel I connect with them in a way much more powerful than words.

Who/what are your major artistic influences?

I was influenced by Japanese pop from an early age, I did not speak the language but theirs were the first songs I ever learned to sing. I used to sing the soundtracks of my favorite anime shows over and over. I read translations of them, which usually have deep and beautiful meaning, and this influenced my writing style, especially my freestyle poetry and the stories I write.

Another major influence is Taylor Swift. Even though she may not be as good a vocalist as other singers, there is something in the way she sings that really touches my soul. I love covering her songs because their stories are so comprehensive and beautiful. In the story of her lyrics, there is always a satisfying conclusion. Her voice feels shaped to convey the emotions of her lyrics perfectly. There is emotion in her music that I cannot find in anything else. Her lyrics influenced my poetry. There are people who read my work who say that I write just like her.

Other influences include Whitney Houston, Kyla, and Lea Salonga.
