Interview Questions:

What inspired you to write this piece?

I felt all alone, like I had hit rock bottom and had no one. It was a very difficult time in my life. I was struggling with depression and could barely pay my bills. I worked 40 h a week and was also enrolled in school full time. Because I worked so much my grades dropped, and despite all my efforts I was this close to getting evicted by my landlord due to late rent payments. My ex, who was my childhood best friend, had just left me, and I'd been through other traumatic events as well. I was beginning to doubt my worth as an Artist and whether I'd ever amount to anything. I considered ending it all. Instead I wrote Tale of an Artist, which is the first song I've ever written. Now that I'm doing great, I listen to it occasionally and keep thinking back on how things could have never gotten better had I chosen the alternative to writing it.

What does music mean to you?

Music literally saved my life, hah! I guess music to me means expressing your emotions and sharing a bit of your soul with the world. Kind of like prose writing, but more ... delicate, if that makes sense. Whereas prose generally needs conflict to be interesting, what I like about music is that it can just as easily be happy as sad. It can be whatever you want it to be! And often, it's a collaborative task, unlike writing, which is solitary. I have very fond memories of collaborating with other musicians.

What do you love about performing?

The thrill and how nervous you are to be put in front of so many people, and the relief that comes when you see their faces light up as they enjoy your performance.

Who/what are your major artistic influences?

I'd say anyone that can write and perform something that moves me. I love classic rock songs like Hotel California. I love Santana's cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, which was one of the inspirations behind Tale of an Artist, music wise. I love The Script – basically, I attach a lot of importance to the quality of the text and to the raw vulnerability that comes with the performance. If music can take me elsewhere and inspire me to create something, then I consider that a major source of inspiration!
