Gracies POV (13 Years Old)

I woke up on Sunday morning with a strange tingly achey feeling in the left side of my cheek,

"Hey Jay" I said as I stopped in his open bedroom doorway "do we have any Advil?" I asked making him frown,

"Yeah" he nodded "why, what's the matter?" He questioned,

"It's just a little toothache" I shrugged as he walked past me to retrieve the pills. I walked to the kitchen to grab a glass of water and a few minutes later Jay appeared.

"Here" he said as he handed me the small white pill "where's the pain?" He asked as I pointed to my upper left cheek "open your mouth" he instructed and I did as instructed "I can't see anything" he said after a couple of seconds "it's probably just a little sensitive" he shrugged "let's hope the Advil takes it off" he said and I nodded in agreement.

Two in the morning

My eyes shot open as a sharp pain shot through the left side of my mouth. Great. With a heavy sigh (and a hand clutching my cheek) I walked over to Wills bedroom,

"Will" I whispered as I shook his bare shoulder "Will" I repeated making his eyes flick open,

"What's the matter?" He asked as he sat up and turned on his bedside lamp, squinting when the light flooded the room,

"My tooth's hurting again" I said nervously,

"Oh" he sighed "I'll get you some more Advil" he said as I sat down on his bed and he left to do just that. A minute later he returned with Advil, a glass of water and an ice pack "here" he said once I had swallowed the pill "this should help take some of the swelling down" he told me and my eyes widened,

"There's swelling?!" I exclaimed in a panicked whisper,

"Just a tiny bit" he assured and I groaned as I held the icepack to my cheek,

"I'm not going to the dentist" I stated adamantly,

"I never said you had to" he replied "but if this keeps up you can't ignore ignore it Gracie" he said sympathetically.

The next morning I woke up with little swelling but just as much pain as the night before,

"How the tooth Gracie?" Jay asked as he walked in to the kitchen as I carefully tried to eat my cereal,

"It's fine" I lied with a wince and he narrowed his eyes suspiciously,

"Gracie" he sighed "if it's hurting you, you need to be honest with us" he said seriously,

"It's not hurting me" I lied "but...could I take another Advil just to be sure?" I asked and he raised an eyebrow "just to make sure it doesn't start hurting again" I clarified and he looked at me unbelievingly,

"Well we wouldn't want it to start hurting again would we?" He asked rhetorically.

Forty minutes later Jay was pulling up outside of my school,

"You know" he said before I had a chance to get out "if you're in pain you don't have to go to school" he reminded. I knew what he was trying to say. He was trying to say that if I'm in pain he's gonna take me to the dentist. Not gonna happen.

"I'm fine" I assured with a fake smile that only increased the pain in my tooth "honestly" I added before jumping out of his truck and running in to school.

The pain had been increasing throughout the day but it became unbearable in fourth period. Gym.

That's how I found myself sitting in the nurses office with an ice pack squished to the side of the my face.

"Ok hunny, your brother Will is on his way" the nurse told me with a sympathetic smile. And just as she predicted, Will walked in twenty minutes later.

"So, my little chipmunk's not doing so great after all" he said as he moved the icepack from my cheek to inspect the swelling,

"I don't care what you have to do anymore" I cried "just make it go away" I pleaded making him smile softly as he pulled me closer to him and rubbed soothing circles on my back.

"Ok ok" he soothed "I already booked you an emergency appointment after I spoke to the nurse" he told me "we'll get it sorted, I promise" he said and I nodded sadly.

Thirty Minutes Later

"Gracelyn Halstead" a lady in a pair of mint coloured scrubs said as she walked in to the waiting room,

"Let's go" Will encouraged as I grabbed his hand nervously and we walked in to the dentists room.

He did an examination and told an x-ray of my teeth before pulling the picture up on his computer and showing us the results,

"So Gracelyn the picture on the right is the x-ray of the last time you came for a checkup" he pointed to the pictures on the screen "and this is the picture we just took" he added "we can see on the most recent picture that you have a small infection at the root of your tooth" he told me,

"So...how do you treat it?" I asked anxiously,

"It's actually fairly simple to treat" he assured "I'm going to prescribe you a weeks course of antibiotics that you kill the infection right off" he told me,

"So no needles?" I asked and he gave me a soft smile,

"No needles" he confirmed "the medication should clear it up within a week" he explained "until then just keep taking the usual pain meds and ice it a few times a day to reduce the swelling" he added and I sighed in relief.

"See, I told you it would be nothing to worry about" Will said as he gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze,

"I'll just go and get the prescription printed up" the dentist said before leaving the room.

Later that day

I was sat on the sofa wearing my pj's and watching friends when Jay came home,

"Hey" he said once he spotted me on the couch "how're you feeling?" He asked,

"Relived" I admitted making him smile "do I have to go to school tomorrow?" I asked as he sat down on the sofa next to me and threw his arm around my shoulder,

"No. You don't have to go to school" he scoffed "but just for tomorrow Gracie" he added and I nodded before resting my head on his chest.

"M'tired" I commented as he kissed the top of my head,

"Well you had broken sleep" he reminded "and you've had a stressful day" he added,

"I had to go to the dentist" I told him with a pout,

"I know" he smiled "you where very brave" he said in a slightly mocking tone making me swat his chest,

"Don't make fun" I whined,

"I wasn't" he defended "I think you where very brave for going to the dentist" he assured and I nodded In agreement "in fact...I bought you something" he said as he walked off in to the hallway and returned a couple of seconds later with a bag of m&ms making me smile.

"You bought me candy for going to the dentist?" I asked amused and he nodded,

"Don't tell Will."
