Slices of Life - Short Story Contest

Hello there! You must be that Great Author in the sky we've been expecting. Please, take a seat. Make yourself at home. Can I get you anything? A cup of tea, perhaps, or a cookie? No?

What about a slice of cake? Fantastic! It's rhubarb, this one. Here you go.

So, here's what the higher-ups at TimberWoolf Industries have sent me. It's a memo on a contest they're running.

From what I gather, it's a bit like a cake. They want you to bake a delicious, beautiful cake with sprinkles and all the good stuff, then take a really, really thin slice and send it in to us.

'Slice of Life' stories are small, tiny pieces of a character's life. Sometimes they have no clear plots or problems, and they hardly ever have definitive endings. Yet, they are just a small taste of much bigger, grander things.

What you have to do is find a very beautiful, interesting story that you want to tell, about a very beautiful, interesting character, then write a very delicious little piece that just has a hint of the grander taste. It helps to think critically about the world the character lives in, and the effect that has on the boring, mundane and tedious tasks the character has to do.

Then write about it, hinting at that underlying story.

A short piece is usually perfect. Here are some recommended ingredients:

- 500 words should do (measure with the heart)

- A dash of excitement (not too much, it overpowers the taste)

- 1 Character (2 if you're feeling especially creative)

- A cup of a finely aged world building (the older the world, the better)

- Bake for a week weeks, until it's reached a nice temperature of 3 March 2019.

As a hint, the Directors up on top this corporate ladder really like the taste of bittersweet, powerful languages, and appreciate a sprinkle of symbolism and expectation subversion.

You good? Yeah, great. I'll take that, don't worry.

Be sure to post your entry marked with a "SliceOfLife" tag, so we can find it in all the mail. I'll tell ya right now, this mailroom's a mess. George down there has been struggling for weeks to get our copier to work.

You might also just want to fill out this entry form, when you get the time. That way we'd know to be expecting you.

Alright, I think that's it. Any questions? No? Okay then, I thank you for your time and due consideration. Here, I'll show you out.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to call, or contact me on my direct mail at . I usually respond. Mostly.

Good then. I'll look forward to your entry! Enjoy your Day!
