True Love

You meet somebody,
Not just anybody,
But a certain someone
You haven't expected
To be with to this day.

Both of you started as strangers,
Became friends soon after,
And way before either of you
Uttered the three words,
Romance has blossomed.

When I say romance,
I don't mean attraction,
For that's most likely
Been present from the start,
But a bond that rivals family.

Countless movies depicted love,
Each that glorifies the feeling
Even if the couple's at distress,
But no matter what,
Your relationship doesn't compare.

When you watched those movies,
You felt obligated to love
Your significant other every second,
Including times of conflict,
Times you should leave each other.

Portrayed as black and white,
Movies told you that you
Either loved or hated them,
Nowhere in between, and yet
The movies contradict themselves.

Here you are in a relationship,
Now experiencing the ups and downs,
Once more nothing like the movies
Where you love them whole,
Instead you have mixed feelings.

Such mixed feelings trigger doubt,
These doubts left uncheck will grow,
Make you question your relationship
Until you're doomed to leave each other,
But what did the movies say again?

The doubts will strengthen
Your relationship no matter what,
But this is reality and you're being
Shown the opposite, where you
Must really work past this dilemma.

Would it kill movies to be honest?
They show the highs and lows
Of a relationship, but they still
Make it as if they love
Each other no matter what.

Is it so wrong for movies
To preach that true love
Comes with mixed feelings
So long as their love for each other
Trumps any sort of distaste?

Imagine how much easier
Your relationship would've been,
How much easier it would've been
To work things out with acquiring
A realistic view of love earlier.
