Chapter Thirty Three

We were strangers, starting out on a journey

Pinatawag kami sa principal's office sa kalagitnaan ng prom.

"This was supposed to be the happiest moment of your lives young ladies but you have ruined it. What can you say for yourselves?"

"She started po eh! Dapat sasayaw kami ni Chase pero she took him away." Maarteng sagot ni Veronica.

"Excuse me. Chase already refused to dance with you in a nice way pero you pulled my hair which prompted me to do the same. In short she started it." Depensa ko naman.

Nakita ko na may lumapit na isang faculty sa Principal at bumulong.

"Miss Reyes, you are a role model of your fellow schoolmates being a cheerleader and all but what you showed there was disgraceful. While you Miss Guevarra, you are one of the top students of your class so this incident is highly unbelievable. Fighting over a person shows immaturity. Ilang buwan na lang at magtatapos na kayo. You should be ashamed of your actions!"

"Sorry po Madam Principal." Sabi ko tila naiiyak na.

"Since both of you are active students, the punishment will be cleaning the ballroom later."

"Huh? But I need to go home for my beauty rest." Reklamo ni Veronica.

"Really? Miss Reyes will stay up to 2 hours of cleaning while Miss Guevara will have an hour. Both of you are dismissed."

"Unfair!" Sabat ulit ni Veronica.

"Do you want another hour added?"
Sagot ng Principal.

"No po. "

Nang lumabas na kami ay nilapitan ni Principal si Chase na nag-aantay sa akin.

"You seem to draw trouble whenever you go, Mister Scott."

"Can't help it. Trouble is my middle name." Narinig kong sagot ni Chase at napangiti na lang ang principal.

Sinamahan ako nila Chase, Maui at Ria na maglinis ng isang oras sa ballroom.

"Sana nilagyan mo ng blackeye! Sayang!" Sabi ni Ria habang tinutupi ang mga skirting na ginamit sa buffet table.

"Nge! Eh di na demanda pa si Kace! Kaw talaga! You're not helping." Sabi ni Maui na nagliligpit ng mga mesa kasama ni Chase.

"I'm helping kaya! Saan ka nakakita ng Greek noble na nagtutupi ha? Ha?!"

"Sorry naman guys. Eh kasi si Veronica! Pero mas okay na yan kesa si Isis ka pero tagahugas pala."

Nagtawanan kami lahat. Yes, we were so mean.

Speaking of Veronica, nasa kitchen pala siya at naghuhugas ng mga kubyertos.

Umuwi kami after an hour at hinatid na ako ni Chase sa bahay.

"Kaw kasi Honey eh! Sa sobrang gwapo mo napapaaway tuloy ako."

"That's why you're my Amazon Girl so other girls can't steal me from you."

"Weh? So ako pa ang tatabog sa mga malalandi? Ganun?"

"Just kidding. You know I'm forever yours." He said and embraced me so tight.

"Dapat lang. You're stuck with me."

"I got something for you." He said and gave me a paper bag.

"Pasok muna ako ha? Kukunin ko din gift ko sa iyo."

Bumalik ako at inabot din yung sa kanya.

"Happy Valentines!" He said and kissed my nose.

"Happy Valentines din my prom king! Sayang di tayo nakasayaw kanina!"

"That's not a problem." Kinuha ni Chase ang phone niya at pinatugtog ang isang love song which is Edwin McCaine's I'll Be.

He held me closed as we both sway to the music sa aming garden.

I'll be your crying shoulder,
I'll be love's suicide
I'll be better when I'm older,
I'll be the greatest fan of your life.

I heard him sang the chorus on my ears and made my heart melt.

After our dance, umuwi na si Chase at binuksan ko ang gift niya.

Natawa ako kasi iyon din ang binigay ko sa kanya.

A Blue Magic Heart shaped pillow.

Goodbye High School

Akalain mo parang kailan lang kami tumapak sa high school and now the thought of leaving it is so near.

"Beks!!! Malapit na tayong magtapos! Congrats sa inyo ni Maui dahil nasa top ten kayo ng buong seniors! I'm a proud friend!" Niyakap kami ni Ria.

"Atta girl. I wouldn't be able to graduate because of you." Sabi naman ni Chase at nakikita ko sa sobrang proud siya sa akin.

"Eh kasi kung pag-aaral ang inatupag ko Ria eh di sana nasa honor roll ka din." Sabi naman ni Maui.

"Okay lang iyon! Basta happy ako na magtatapos na tayo! College here we come!"

Every afternoon may mga rehearsal kami for the graduation song.

Dahil si Maui ang class president ay hinahayaang niyang lumiban sa practice si Chase dahil nagtatrabaho pa siya sa shop.

He was always busy kasi pinag-iipunan niya ang college tuition niya at ang mga bills which makes me love him more. Napaka-responsable niya kahit medyo pasaway lang minsan.

Graduation Day

Everything was white. Lahat kami naka-toga at excited, malungkot or masaya.

This is it.

Nakahawak kamay kami ni Chase habang kinukunan ng litrato nila Mama Cel.

Medyo I felt sad kasi Chase's parents won't be there for him. Ako sanay na wala si Mommy pero nagksype siya sa akin.

"Napaka-gwapo naman ng adopted ko." Sabi ni Mama Cel habang inaayos ang toga ni Chase at napangiti naman ang isa.

Lahat kami ay tinawag na para sa graduation march.

Ang mga with honors ay nasa harap kaya di kami magkasama ni Chase.

Nang tinawag ang pangalan ko sa entablado ay napasigaw si Chase.

"That's my girl!"

Napatingin ang mga tao sa kanya at napatawa na lang.

"I'm so proud of you apo." Maluha luhang sabi ni Mama Cel habang sinusuot sa akin ang medal ko.

"Alay ko po ito sa inyo Mama."
Niyakap ako ni Mama Cel at parang naiiyak na rin ako.

After ng program ay nagkaroon kami ng class picture at katabi ko si Chase.

Sa isang wacky photo namin at hinalikan niya ako sa pisngi tapos nakanganga ang bibig ko dahil sa pagkagulat.

I printed a bigger copy and placed it on a picture frame.

"You still can't get over that photo? Let's go. We don't want to miss the orientation at AU."

Chase held my hand and pulled me towards the door.
