Greg opened his front door to see you stood on his porch, you were soaked from walking 3 miles to his house, you looked a mess. Your eyes were bloodshot from crying, your make-up had ran down your face, making you look like a killer clown from a horror movie and you were shaking like a leaf from the sheer coldness of the british weather "Another rejection?" He questioned, You nodded timidly and he immediately stepped aside to let you through into the warmth of his house. Greg had been through this routine with you for at least 3 months now, you were in the process of trying to get your book published, and so far, had been rejected by all of the publishers you'd pitched to and every single time you did. You'd always head straight over to Greg's house and he'd always have time for you, comforting you until you'd stopped crying.

You sat despondently down on his couch. Greg sat down beside you, his eyes fixed on you for a few moments before he stretched his arms out and you instantly threw yourself into his chest "This shirt was fresh on today" He said, You quickly pulled away from him as you realized you were soaked from the rain "Sorry" You mumbled, a soft laugh escaping your lips. He half smiled at you "I'm glad you find it so funny" He said, as he gradually undone his buttons, until you could see his tanned torso underneath. You'd been friends with Greg for over 3 years now. You'd met him when your brother started at Scotland Yard and you instantly clicked. He was just what you needed, you were studying for your creative writing degree and he supported you every step of the way, keeping you motivated and focused, and from there, you began to see more and more of each other, to the point where you couldn't imagine your life without him. He was the best friend you'd ever had.                                       "Want to change into some of my clothes?" He questioned, You nodded and he chuckled "I'm pretty sure half of my wardrobe is at your house as it is" He said, you chuckled "I'll bring it back soon" You replied "You better, otherwise I'm not going to have any clothes to wear" He laughed as he got up and made his way over to the door "I'll be back in a minute" He said.

Greg took a deep breath as he made his way up the stairs to fetch you some fresh clothes. He ran his hands through his hair as he thought about ways of how he could tell you how he felt. Over the past 3 months, he'd seen an awful lot of you, he'd been your shoulder to cry on and he couldn't help but develop feelings for you. But he was terrified to tell you, in fear of ruining your friendship. He absolutely adored you, and he couldn't risk losing you. You'd been there for him as much as he had you, you were the only person he spoke to during the separation from his wife. You didn't know it, but you had single handedly stopped him from taking a serious downhill turn. You kept him going and you still did. He couldn't bare the thought of being without you. He promptly grabbed a pair of joggers and plain tee for you, before he grabbed a t-shirt for himself "Greg! Can I grab some food?" You yelled from downstairs "Help yourself" Greg yelled back as he tucked the clothes under his arm and made his way downstairs.

"I'm making a sandwich, you want one?" You questioned as you watched him enter the room "No, I'm alright" He replied. He watched you as he sat down at the worktop, he smiled as he watched your smile grow on your face, the smile he loved so much. He'd never admit this to you, but he loved when you got a rejection from a publisher's, because it meant he'd get to spend time with you. He loved how you wouldn't even mention about the publisher, you'd come round, simply because you wanted to spend time with him and he made you feel better. It was so natural and real.

"Hey Greg" You said, he gradually snapped out of his daydream, but before he could register what was going on, you slapped some butter across his cheek. His jaw dropped as you laughed hysterically as you ran around the kitchen, away from him. Greg smirked and promptly got up from his chair. You watched him like a hawk as he grabbed a piece of lettuce and ran toward you, you instantly ran the opposite way, but were no match for the detective's fast reflexes as he rapidly swiveled round and caught you round the face with the lettuce. You laughed as you grabbed a bag of flour on the side and poured some over him "(Y/N)!" Greg yelled. You laughed again as you looked up at him, his silver hair, now white. "You look like a snowman" You giggled. Greg frowned sulkily at you, before he reached out and tried to grab to the bag from you "Give that here!" He snapped through clenched teeth. You laughed hysterically as he took the bag and the contents flew over him.

Greg scrunched his face up in annoyance as he stood covered in flour. You doubled over in laughter as you looked up at him. Greg bit his lip as he tried to suppress the smile on his face before he wildly shook the flour off him, some of which fell onto you. You couldn't help but continue to laugh "God, I let you into my house and you wreck the place!" Greg exclaimed. You pouted innocently at him as you jumped up onto the counter "I'll clean it up" You said, as you threw your arm around him and pulled him into you. He smiled affectionately at you as he stepped between your legs "You'll get a book deal soon" He murmured. You smiled as you wrapped your arms loosely around his neck "I hope so" You replied "And then you won't need me anymore" He said, slightly downhearted. You frowned in confusion at him "What do you mean? I'll always need you" You paused. Greg felt his heart pound against his chest, as he took a deep breath, ready to tell you how he felt "You're my best friend" You said and his heart sank. He sighed and nervously looked down at the floor. You cocked your head to one side as you looked intensely at him "Was you going to say something?" You questioned. He gradually shook his head, before he slowly peered up at you again "Yes you were Greg Lestrade, I know you" You said as you gently poked his nose. He laughed lightly, before he took a deep breath "What is it?" You questioned. He looked intensely at you for a moment "Keep smiling. You'll get there" He murmured, You smiled affectionately at him as you tightly embraced him. He sighed as he rested his chin on your shoulder. Someday he'd tell you.
