You were awoken in the middle of the night by strange noises.

Prying your eyes open just a sliver, you performed a quick scan of your darkened bedroom. You didn't immediately detect any threats, but you did notice that Levi was no longer sleeping next to you. Instead, he was rummaging around the closet – which you realized was the source of the noises that had woken you.

"Levi?" you questioned blearily.

He didn't answer.

While rubbing the sleep from your eyes, you hauled yourself out of bed, then slid on your slippers and made your way to the closet. Once you drew near, you realized Levi's movements were actually frantic while he dug through his belongings and yours. He was standing on his injured leg – which he knew he shouldn't be doing. And he was muttering to himself.

"Where the hell...of all the times...dammit, this leg is killing me...tch, not the time...need to get out there...they're counting on me..."

"Levi?" you murmured, your brow creasing with worry.

You gently placed a hand on his shoulder – and he practically jumped, his body tensing for a fight as he snapped to face you. You froze, and for a second, neither of you moved as you stared at each other. But then his wide eyes softened with recognition, and he loosed a breath.

"Oh...it's you..." he muttered. But something was off. You could tell that his mind was somewhere else.

Levi resumed his frantic search. "Have you seen my gear?" he asked, his words coming out in a rush. "I can't find it anywhere, and I need it now. Everyone is out there fighting. They could die, and it would be my fault if I wasn't there to protect them. Shit, where is it?"

Ice flooded your body from head to toe. Now, you were scared. "Levi, sweetheart, stop," you insisted, being as gentle as possible while you tried to turn him away from the closet. "You need to look at me."

He whirled to face you, and this time, tears were forming in his eyes. "What?" he snapped. "What could be more important than this? Our comrades are dying –"

"No, they're not," you stated. You placed your hands on his cheeks in an attempt to make him focus on you. "Levi, listen to me. No one is fighting. The titans are gone, and the war is over. It ended a few months ago."

Beneath your touch, Levi went still. The look on his face was devastated. "What..." he stammered, his voice nothing more than a whisper. "What are you saying?"

"Sweetheart, the world has been at peace for a while now," you explained, trying to keep your voice level even as you were terrified the trauma had made him lose his mind. "Remember? We stopped the Rumbling, and you had to stay in the hospital for a few weeks while the doctors treated your injuries, and then we moved into this house together. We don't have to fight anymore."

"We...don't?" he questioned, his face scrunching with confusion.

Then, to your immense relief, he slowly seemed to come back to the present. "We don't," he repeated, his eyes falling to the floor. They squeezed shut, and he ran a hand through his hair, seeming upset with himself. "Shit. I'm sorry. I – shit, I don't know what came over me. I'm so sorry. I –"

"Shh. You don't have to apologize," you cooed while brushing your fingers through his undercut, filled with an overwhelming sense of relief that he now seemed to know where and when he was. Then you wrapped an arm around his waist, supporting him. "Come on, let's sit down. We need to get you off that leg."
