PROLOGUE

Blocking out the cheers from every corner of the stadium, I walked to the uneven bars. I looked at my hands, with grips on and chalked like every practice session in the last decade. All those countless hours, the rips, the wounds, the tears, the pain, it all came down to this moment.

I looked at my coach and the team, who stood together, huddled in a corner cheering for me. I looked at the audience and I knew that my family was up there, holding their breaths. I started.

“That was one of the best landings I’ve witnessed!” I heard and all I could feel was my friends engulfing me in hugs and squeals all around me. I knew what I did was good, but the score would decide everything.

“And the new all-around world champion is…” the commentator lagged on as they tabulated the scores of the judging panel. I closed my eyes and looked down, my heart beating like drums.

“Alisha, USA!” I looked up to find my name on top, with a difference of a very few points from the runner up, a Chinese gymnast. I was the new world champion.
