Growing up without a parent is hard.

Growing up with a parent who refuses to tell you anything about your father is worse.

I've always been a curious kid, that's just how I am.

I like learning new things and I've always done well in school.

My mom has done everything for me and I love her to death.

However, I wish she had told me the truth about my father sooner.

Because I'm curious, I took matters into my own hands and began researching my mom's high school.

My mom was young when she had me, only 18.

So all I knew is that whoever got her pregnant went to high school with her.

I've asked my mother about him more times than I can count but she always tells me that he isn't important.

He may not be important to her but he is to me.

I mean I'm 22 years old and I still haven't found anything.

And I've been searching since middle school!

"Dahlia! I'm home!" My mom calls out from downstairs.

I'm currently in my last year of college at Columbia and since the holidays are coming up, I've come home to stay with my mom.

Sometimes it's hard to be away from her, I know she gets lonely.

She hasn't even bothered to find anyone else.

All she's ever been focused on is me and sometimes I feel guilty.

I've tried everything to get her to try to meet someone, dating apps, awkward double dates (don't ask), and even talked to some of her coworkers.

Nothing!

I mean she's still young too!

She's only 40 and I don't want to sound weird, but she looks amazing for her age.

"How was work?" I ask.

"Good, these 4 girls snuck into the school after hours." She chuckles.

"What? Why would someone willingly come back to school?"

"They were researching someone." She shrugs.

"Who?" I ask.

"Mayor Bishop."

"Oh. Did they find what they were looking for?"

"I think so." She says before quickly turning away and beginning to make dinner.

My mom has never been a fan of politics, especially Mayor Bishop.

I mean she despises him.

I wouldn't be surprised if she had a secret shrine where she throws darts at a picture of his face.
