"All of my stuff is gone," Jade said. She leaned back in her chair.
Alaric took a breath. "Yeah, I know that."
"Because you're the one who moved it."
"Yes."
Jade tilted her head. "Why?"
"I didn't want students poking their nose in danger when staff were working on it."
"A student poking their nose in is what got me out," Jade said.
"And I'm very grateful for that." Alaric folded his hands. "But it also got another student stuck in the pit and four others killed - only one of whom came back to life."
Jade shrugged. "That's fair. I'm glad you got your daughter back."
"Thank you. All of your stuff is safe in storage. I can get it to you within the hour. But this -" Alaric set a Salvatore pin on the desk. "- I held onto."
"What for?" Jade looked down at the pin. It was definitely hers. It had the same replacement backing from when she lost hers.
"As a reminder of what my job is: to keep my students safe."
Jade cradled the pin in her palm. "Well thanks."
