I was traveling with a small group of ocean researchers out on the open seas in a relatively large ship. We had strayed from a busy "boat highway," comparative to automobile traffic, and would be out at sea for a while.
Sometime just before evening, our captain slowed the ship to a halt and encouraged us to gear up and dive down. We curiously obeyed, dawning our diving suits and oxygen tanks, and jumped into the salty water.
As our eyes adjusted to the dim lighting just beneath the surface, we saw them: a small family of humpback whales! They were breaching the surface for air several yards from us. Their image was so vivid; how their massive bodies moved slowly and gently through the murky blue water. How their white undersides seemed to glow. How they interacted with each other as if performing a lulling dance. We were ecstatic and awestruck. We even got to witness a curious calf come close to us to check us out before rejoining her family.
The encounter didn't last long, but it felt like the end of a lifetime.
