Yes, he surely could trust his best friend, although, over time, Doc had gotten so fascinated by the secrets of the human flesh and the human brain that Feng Xin worried he might one day kill  in order to get his hands on fresh entrails.

They had been in the same gang as teenagers and just kept in touch  -  no strings attached, just casually. Doc liked Feng Xin's physical strength and his bitter sense of humor. And Feng Xin liked the loyalty. He never got to know the scrawny boy's name, ever  –  he had always been an unusual Alpha, but always faithful, always sticking out for him.

He got to studying medicine with immense zest, thirsty to know all there was to know about how to dismember and hurt and kill in the best way possible, studying meticulously all the lessons about the nervous system, especially in Omegas and Betas. The two of them would always joke about it, mostly  -  inappropriate, dark serial killer jokes, and would often enjoy watching horror movies together, but Feng Xin's unease around the melancholy, skinny Alpha grew in time. There was a scary kind of hunger in his eyes, and it had nothing to do with sex.

On most days, the bouncer would put on the news on TV, half-worried he would hear some horrible reports about multiple murders and his friend's arrest.

Doc worked at the city morgue now, for the Chief Coroner too, still curious about the various murder weapons, and causes of death, his morbid fascination with decay never diminishing with time and his more mature age now. Feng Xin missed him. He worked a lot, and often communicated with Betas, as most criminals were, indeed, Betas  –  least affected by the laws of nature, they were the most free of the three genders,  least bound to rules and regulations, and by far most prone to crime and illegal deals.

Unlike him, Doc was fascinated by Betas. Almost attracted to them. It made Feng Xin sick, it was unhealthy.

It made Feng Xin sick, it was unhealthy
