I stared at this being before me. Their skin shone, not with sweat or oil like a normal person's skin would look like, it had a metallic shine. It sparkled unnaturally, I wonder what it felt like... It almost reminded me of that scene in Twilight where their skin sparkles in under the sunlight. That series was my guilty pleasure. Most people shunned them away, but I liked them - not that I would admit it! No one knows that I like to sit at home eating ice cream and watching vampire movies. Not even Erza knew, and she's my best friend. And I certainly didn't plan on telling Laxus, I'd get teased for days.
Their eyes were glazed. People say that the eyes are the window to the soul, but with them I could see nothing.
They looked empty.
They looked human, but they held no humanity. They were still. Unlike most people, who slouched or lent to one side while they stood, Model 00124 Y/N had the posture of a doll - stiff and still, the only thing that they were lacking was a smile. Their lips drew into a thin line and they looked back at me with dull eyes.
I worked in a laboratory specializing in robotics. Our recent project of life-like androids had been kept a secret so that we don't cause an outbreak. Besides, if the project failed then the people looking forward to it would be let down. It was best to keep it a secret.
So far, all previous models had been a failure. They didn't respond to questions and when they spoke it was all garbled and rubbish. Right now, Model 00124 Y/N wasn't looking any better.
I removed my hands from my lab coat pockets, taking a pen out of the right one as I removed my hand. Turning, I grabbed the clipboard that lay on the table behind me. I flicked through the pages and clicked the pen before filling out the information.
Model: 00124 Y/N
Appearance: dull, stiff. They look unresponsive like the other models.
Ability to speak:
Ability to answer simple questions:
Ability to answer challenging questions:
My pen scratched across the paper as I scribbled down the information. I stopped at the third point. This would be the turning point, if Model 00124 Y/N could answer me, then we were on the right track.
I chewed on my pen, wondering on what to say. I glanced over at the android, their eyes still glued to me. It was slightly off-putting. "Model 00124 Y/N, can you hear me?" It was simple, but if it worked then it would be amazing.
They blinked. Light entered their eyes, I was slightly taken aback. They were still dim, but now I could see something behind them.
"Yes, I can," they replied. Relief spread through me, this was a turning point! Their voice was monotone and dull, but they spoke nonetheless. Their head jolted awkwardly around as they spoke, trying to mimic a real human - I noted it down as a point that needed to be attended to.
"This is very good, Model 00124 Y/N. Can you tell me how many planets there are?" All models were programmed with basic knowledge of us, they were like a living computer. It just depended on if they could voice it.
"There are eight officially recognised planets; Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. However, post 2006, there were nine planets in the solar system, but since then, Pluto has not been recognised as a planet," they spoke. A small smile spread across my face and I started to take notes. A piece of hair fell over the clipboard, prompting me to tuck it back behind my ear. I opened my mouth to say something, but the model spoke first. "You have very lovely hair Professor..." I heard whirring as their eyes zoomed in on my name tag, "Strauss."
