I walked into the kitchen, putting on my school bag. Mrs. Coker stood behind the island counter, eating an apple from the fruit bowl. Yinka was seated on one of the high stools, he had a saucer with sliced apples on it and a bottle of water set out before him. He had his head bent over his phone

"Good Evening, ma" I said

"Evening, my dear" she said in between mouthfuls. "Are you heading out, now?"

I nodded. "Yes, ma"

She lifted her phone from the counter, glanced at it and then put it back down. "It's 7:45"

"Yes ma"

"It's quite late. Would you be able to get home on time?" she said

"Yes ma" I nodded

"Are you sure?" she titled her head slightly as she asked.

"Yes. I'm sure" I said firmly

"Okay. If you say so" she said

I nodded. I actually came into the kitchen to get a bottle of water before I headed out so I walked straight up to the fridge. I grabbed the nearest bottle of water on the rack and shut the fridge. I was about to walk out of the kitchen when Mrs Coker called me back.

"Ma?" I said as I turned around

"Is today your birthday?" she asked

How did she know that?

I nodded. 'Yes ma"

"Oh wow!" she exclaimed. "Happy birthday"

I broke into a shy smile. "Thank you, ma"

For the first time since I walked into the kitchen, Yinka lifted his head from his phone. He turned in my direction.

"Happy birthday"

"Thank you"

"Goodness. Why didn't you say anything?"Mrs Coker said

I shrugged. I didn't know I was supposed to announce it

She looked to Yinka. "You know, it was because of this girl—what's her name- Uhm, Bisola. Yeah, yesterday she was the one who told me today was her birthday"

"I just completely forgot until now," she said looking back at me. "You should have said something now"

I let out an awkward chuckle.

"So how old are you now?" she asked

"I'm plus one" I said jokingly

She chuckled. "Tah. Plus one for where. How old are you jare?"

"I'm twenty-two, ma," I said

"Wow. Twenty-two, you're a big girl o" she teased

I chuckled.

She turned towards the deep freezer. "Let me see if there's still... ice cream"

"Don't worry, ma. Thank you" I said

She ignored me and opened the freezer.

After moving some things around in the freezer, she finally pulled out a family-sized tube of ice cream. I'm not even going to lie that I haven't been eyeing that ice cream. In fact, almost everything in that freezer was drool-worthy.

I managed to keep my composure. "Ah ma, it's fine. You don't have to—"

"Take this thing jare" she said as she placed the tube on the counter. "You think I'm begging you"
