The anti-aircraft radar is also equipped with an upgraded version of the OPS-14, and although it does not carry guided missiles because it is a police ship, its anti-air and anti-ship capabilities have reached the highest level for vessels owned by the Coast Guard, making it the most powerful patrol vessel, surpassing the Shikishima and Akitsushima.
It was named after Itsukushima, an IJN warship that was well known, with plans to build more ships named Matsushima and Hashidate.
